It's a non-starter because the local NIMBYs will not allow extension of an el over the street. I think many of us on here, myself included, find NIMBYs to be very tiresome- but they do have political power- it's a fact. Hence the lack of viable plans for the Rockaway Beach and Lower Montauk branches. For the Lower Montauk, how about converting it to above-ground subway (like the SIR), eliminate all grade crossings, build a new tunnel under the east river leading to a 34th Street crosstown subway. Will never happen.

But the Connecting Railroad is pretty much out of view, and a service to LGA like the JFK Air Train (except use LIRR or MNRR equipment), could easily run alongside or astride the BQE and GCP.

But there are NIMBYs for the Airtrain too, yet Cuomo appears to be able to bulldoze through them. Plus, the fact that the report makes no mention of "community opposition" and instead points out community support from a transit "desert".

Dunno about a 34th St subway - Herald Square is crowded enough as it is. :-S Getting a line through that and dealing with the East River tunnels nearby sounds like a pain, though the idea of a line that at least terminates at a major hub like Herald Square is a good one.

I think it's a pretty good idea to turn the lower Montauk into a rapid transit line, though not necessarily part of the subway system. I was thinking either part of Triboro RX or a sibling to it, running on diesel power.

this really belongs elsewhere. that said, the "news" problem is as if we had competing outlets describing the physiical routes of the subway and a large contingent simply deny there are IRT tunnels that are not built to IND width. Perhaps we are experiencing "quantum" reality without understanding it. If you are run over by a truck and your leg is broken, acknowledging that you are wounded is recommended in my universe. An extension of the 31st St. Astoria el can be 2 tracks of fully concrete railroad with only 1 pillar instead of 2 parallel ones. Build it like the air train and WMATA above ground railroads. It will be much quieter (listen to the #7 above Queens Blvd.) than the current line. Plus isn't 31st St. much wider past Ditmars Blvd.?

Forget most of the TV ones (though BBC remains sane and somehow Fox seems to have become sane).

For solid center reporting, The Hill is my pick.

For right wing, the Daily Wire is actually good. Probably because Ben Shapiro went in to 2016 as a never Trumper, they won't ignore bad news around Trump. For example both the GAO report and the Yavonovich surveillance text message stories are represented there, and while they throw their opinion on top, the complete text of the source is also available within those stories.

Yeah, and as 3-9 pointed out, there's no practical way to get across the 34th Street BDFMNQRW station.

So- OK- let's spend the billions slated for LGA access to a subway along 10th or 11th Avenue (Hudson or West Broadway in Lower Manhattan). With all the development on the West Side, that might make some sense.

How about SAS Phases 3 and 4?

I think all of these make more sense than an Air Train requiring multiple transfers, and that approaches the airport from the wrong direction.

What's funny is what the end result of this will be. The pre-Cuomo plan:
-Expanding LIRR footprint to 3 tracks with the same visual profile (sloped ground for embankments).
-Mineola rebuilt into a station with all tracks platforming, resulting in an ease of increasing express service to it.

Post Cuomo:
-LIRR visual profile will change from sloped ground to elevated with retaining wall or open cut with retaining wall - walls which, unlike dirt, attract graffiti.
-Mineola becomes harder to stop at, meaning trains which do Hicksville-Jamaica are more flexibly routed.

Bottom line: Their NIMBYism resulted in an uglier landscape that primarily benefits people east of the communities it passes through. Ha-ha!

Not only does Mineola suffer, but the Oyster Bar Branch will continue to be a stepchild. Any hopes for some more short-turn MU trains to East Williston are now off the table.

Concrete pillars and structure like at Valley Stream - Rockville Centre also tend to crack and become maintenance headaches. RVC was built in 1953, but the structure and platform were falling apart in the late 1970's. Now it is falling apart again.

Tom Suozzi was Floral Park mayor and lead the NIMBY effort. He was trying to get every shack in the way declared historic landmark. Now he is a Congressman. How much roll did he play behind the scenes in getting Andrew chickening out to NIMBY's ?
