It's a non-starter because the local NIMBYs will not allow extension of an el over the street. I think many of us on here, myself included, find NIMBYs to be very tiresome- but they do have political power- it's a fact. Hence the lack of viable plans for the Rockaway Beach and Lower Montauk branches. For the Lower Montauk, how about converting it to above-ground subway (like the SIR), eliminate all grade crossings, build a new tunnel under the east river leading to a 34th Street crosstown subway. Will never happen.But the Connecting Railroad is pretty much out of view, and a service to LGA like the JFK Air Train (except use LIRR or MNRR equipment), could easily run alongside or astride the BQE and GCP. |
