Re: End of the MK R-42s

Posted by Widecab5 on Sat Dec 28 21:56:53 2019

I assume by now that this message was apprised that the last final revenue trip of the last MK R-42 train ran on the 5:15 Z on Friday, December 27, then was laid up from Jamaica Center to ENY Yard.

Consist was (n) 4824/25-4831/30-4816/17-4799/98 (s).

Only 4790/91 were left as a spare set at ENY.

The first I received of official "Retirement" of the MK R-42 fleet was on the morning of December 21, effective the previous afternoon of December 20:

4792/93, 4800-03, 4808/09, 4812-15, 4820-23, 4826-29, 4836-39 (24).

At that time there was still only two trains per day on J and Z as had been nominal since August, at the time only 2 8-car trains still in passenger service.

Further notified on December 23 (the follow Monday) were retirement of:

4788/89, 4794-97, 4804-07, 4810/11, 4832-35 (16) for a total of 40/50. This included the second last 8-car passenger train consisting (not as make-up) being 4796/97, 4804-07, 4832/33.

Effective after the last revenue trip on December 27, 2019 PM rush, the final 10 MK R-42s were "retired" as of Saturday morning, December 28.

Two 8-car trains are detailed to Work Service at Coney Island (4794/95, 4802/03, 4808/09, 4838/39).

Two 8-car trains are detailed to Work Service at 207 Street
(4800/01, 4812/13, 4820/21, 4834/35).

Four cars were laid up at Pitkin as of December 27 (4826-29).

All others awaiting "fleet transfer" from ENY to elsewhere, guessing to 207 for processing for future scrapping to New Jersey.

:( Gonna miss these cars, I went to Transit Tech HS between 2001 and 2004 and the R42 were majority on the J line.the fact they lasted 50 years is something.

Wow. Its finally over.

I remember when the 42s were backbone of the Eastern Div and rode them daily on the J line, even remember them dominating the L before the 143s took over. It was great when they were transferred to the A/C lines and later on Jamaica Yard about a decade ago.

I'm glad we got an extra 10 years or so out of the 42 Fleet, so I can't complain about them finally being retired. I enjoyed them as railfan and they was comfortable as a regular rider. I probably rode the 42s the most out of all the stainless steel SMEE's that got replaced by the 160s.

With that being said, ENY is now 100% NTT!!!! According to the old timers on here, ENY was historically a dumping ground and now its entirety made up a shiny, modern, fancy new tech trains.

I am surprised they lasted into the autumn. Now the old cars of the Eastern Division are the R143's. Now they have no choice but to park NTT trains of one sort or another at 111th Street.

This confirms one rumor I heard. The other is that the R32's are all toast by March 31st. That one is a harder stretch. If they need 110 to last until there are sufficient R211's, put them on the J to keep the AC functioning.

Well for whats my own nostalgic remembrance, the R-42s and the Mod R-40s were a huge legion of the heartiest of the heartiest trains whatever tried to sink them.

Here's to their years out of Concourse on the "Dog" (D) in the 70's and 80's before the R-68s showed up to Brighten the Brighton Line.

In all my years watching NYCT(A) the only route I never saw the R-42's usually operated was the GG then G (i.e. "The Crosstown") though a few wandered there too.

I remember well when they were on the D back then. I preferred to ride the D over the other lines in The Bronx, because the R42/40m trains, which tended to be quite a bit cleaner than the older cars on the other Bronx lines (until the R62s began to appear on the 4).

Actually, starting in the mid 1930s, the Eastern Division had the newest cars and most technologically state of the art equipment ordered by the BMT pre unification, the Multis and the Bluebird and in the early 1950s, the Jamaica Line received what was then the newest rolling stock on the NYCTS, the R-16s. After the arrival oof the R-16s, the BMT Eastern had the newest equipment on the BMT till the arrival of the R-27s in 1960.

The Arnines weren't even that old at the time. While I always thought of them as "the old trains" that was probably because of the incandescent lights, but I also remember their groans and the smell. Just riding them on the holiday train reminds me of why they felt old.

Arnines seemed as old as the Standards. Most Broadway-Brooklyn locals, which is all half the stations got east of ENY with skip-stop service, still got Standards, and a transfer to an express at Elderts Lane or Eastern Pkwy.

The Jamaica el was a schlep, but quite fast west of ENY, even with R16's.

The IND never did a good job in serving the financial district. The E train to Broadway-Nassau was a long ride, and that was still short of Wall Street. Back then the area was very stratified - financial firms near Wall STreet, insurance firms near Fulton Street, mostly along William STreet.

LION first rode the old Arnines on the Queenxszboro lines baack in the 60s.

Him not think old they were, just a tad old-fashioned.
Dad told me they were the best cars on the subway. But then he was a dyed in the wool IND rider, his mom lived on that line, and the train stopped at the RCA building, so why would he ever see another subway line.

When I started rail-fanning I went on the BMT at 34th Street, and the R-27s were the cat's meow. And then came the 32s.

LION wandered over to the IRT and found him there decent cars, older than the 27s but newer than the 9s. Occasional LoVs were to be found during the rush hours, and that set me looking for the oldest cars on the subway.

I thought I hit GOLD on the 3rd Ave El, but then I got on the Myrtle... And there, there indeed were the oldest cars on they system.
