Re: Omny expansion and Byford is angry at Thales

The mobile payment system up here for CDTA is one of those scan a code ones - the app creates a 2d barcode that needs to be placed onto a scanner on the farebox (and it takes 2 seconds to scan). It's quite annoying.

I also find NJT's scan a code thing annoying at their turnstiles. The best solution, the system used by the vast majority of commuter rail outside North America which uses turnstile/tap systems that can easily have NFC overlaid on them, would be very costly to implement here.

NYC is more or less at 40 Degrees latitude, London is at 51. I've been to Inverness, which is at 57.

The UK is kept relatively warm by the Gulf Stream.

Contactless is rolling out with all the major credit card companies to combat a defection to Apple Watch and other mobile only payment systems that complete transactions faster than swipe or chip based tech . Chase and Citibank will be 100% contactless by early 2020 . All 4 of my chase accounts have received new cards . Same with my 3 Citi accounts .

I don't know Portland well but I do know Seattle.

Mid-July to mid-August there is often no rain at all. It can get hot once the fog burns off. The rest of the summer typically is partly cloudy with a chance of showers. Early to mid June it can easily still be in the 50s and rainy.

I have been snowed on 40 miles southeast of Seattle, not even too high in the mountains (maybe 4000 feet), on July 1.

My original point was that Seattle summers have always been dry. Maybe they have gotten drier and hotter, but I haven't heard much about that. In fact I heard that the summer of 2018 was cooler than normal.

That is the problem with the law. It only covers one side of the coin (pun intended). It does no good to call all US coins and bills legal tender unless merchants are required to accept it!!! Unfortunately it seems that many laws are passed that give the citizens a false sense of security without addressing any loopholes that might arise.

The law served exactly the purpose it was intended to. It established the legitimacy of money issued by the US gov't. The fact that people don't understand that and think it means something else is unfortunate, but also of little consequence.

So why did they go with the Thales units for the 7, instead of the proven Siemens ones? Was it a question of legally having to go with the low bidder? Sometimes, you get what you pay for. Did they not think to put temperature and/or water/ice resistance in the specifications, and make sure the parts were tested to meet them?

For a narrow definition of summer - mid July to mid August.

The first and last month of summer have plenty of showers, usually.

My Chase IHG Hotel Mastercard does not have it yet, which is the only Mastercard they offer. My Chase Freedom VISA card does not expire until 2023.

There are plenty of smaller banks in NYC, smaller than M&T or TD, and I don't think any of them have it.

Chase is sending new contactless cards out even before card expires. As per chase press releases , all cards will be converted by early 2020 .

They have not gotten to you yet.

They sent me a new freedom unlimited card and then a new contactless version 3 months latter .

Doesn't say their Mastercard, just VISA. I have a Feedom and a Freedom Unlimited. That latter one is Contactless because it recently renewed.

The problem isn’t with the law, it’s that you seem to not know what “legal tender” means and you decide to come up with your own definition. You keep posting this and you keep getting schooled but it doesn’t stick.

Isn't the problem that he doesn't know what "debt" means? That if I buy an item from a merchant it doesn't result in a debt?

I have to agree here. Money is a two-way street. To say that one can legally offer it but no one is required to accept it is like sending trains to a downtown terminal where they derail and still expecting them to return on the uptown track on time.

In any case, we can expect to see laws requiring businesses to accept at least small denominations of cash as more businesses try to do away with it.

Plenty of businesses have very good reasons to avoid handling cash, or to restrict what size bills or coins that they accept. As long as they have a sign that informs customers ahead of time I'm fine with it. There are many jurisdictions that already have laws requiring certain businesses to accept cash. Typical would be up to $20 bills. I think NYC has one going into effect soon.

It doesn't. Thankfully, the bill was pulled, but it will likely be reïntroduced and enacted at some point.

There is no reason for a ban on cashless business. If there were a sufficient clamor for paying cash, then businesses would cater to all of the customers who want to.

Agree. Also, the number of people who are unbanked that politicians throw around does not reflect the reality that a good part of that number is by choice. IDNYC removed one of the common barriers to obtaining an account.
