Actually, Sonny was rubbed out on the Atlantic Beach Bridge, which connects Far Rockaway and the Five Towns with Atlantic Beach.

That bridge is, to this day, the only toll bridge operated by Nassau County.

Watch the movie. In the film, you can see "Atlantic Beach Bridge" signage.

I concede the film might have taken license with the original novel.

I'll give you this from the book, though:

"Afterward, all four men, the three actual assasins and the bogus toll collector, were in their car and speeding toward the Meadowbrook Parkway, on the other side of Jones Beach."

That puts Sonny on the Loop Parkway, which had been completed at the time of the events in The Godfather, and would indicate that Puzo has Corleone coming back from Point Lookout. Since the juncture of the Meadowbrook and the Loop Parkway had tolls at both entrances to Jones Beach, this fits. However, Corleone could also return to the city via the Atlantic Beach Bridge from Point Lookout via Long Beach, which is closer to what is suggested in the film. There is that...

It is unfortunate since the Chicago agency charged with building the expressways is called the Department of SUBWAYS and Superhighways. NY should have had a department like that so that transportation in NY could have been intelligently planned. That was also the fault of that anti trolley mayor Laguardia who along with his appointee Moses was responsible for the deathe of sensible transit planning i NYC.

It could have been any Jewish organization with sufficient clout like the United Jewish Appeal or the Anti Defamation League. In one of Ken Burns’ documentaries, Moses was recorded in an interview when asked if the residents in the South Bronx complained when the X Bronx Expwy was built through their neighborhood saying “Oh no, they gave us no trouble at all.” Such blatant lying is inexcusable and its unfortunate that the residents couldn’t have gotten together and stopped him like they were able to stop the Lower Manhattan Expwy.

It’s unfortunate that the NYC fiscal crisis put an end to many of the MTA’s plans since they would have partially undone some of Moses’ damage. On its face, the creation of the Cross Bronx Expwy destructive to neighborhoods though it was might not have been so bad if it had been constructed with a median for rapid transit Chicago style The same for the LIE and G/Cent Pky.
