It wasn't passive bigotry. He bulldozed working class neighborhoods, relocated them into Projects and super blocks, while he sent his Parkways on dangerous reverse curve to avoid County clubs.People who are members of exclusive country clubs have the power to force highways to be rerouted. It's as true now as it was then. It was either reroute the road, or not build it at all. Politicians today would get nothing done instead of coming up with imperfect solutions. Note that when it came time to build the LIE, Moses got his revenge by routing the LIE straight through. |
