Re: NY Daily News: Robert Moses’ Name Should Be Removed from Public Works

The overpasses on the way to Jones Beach were not constructed to keep buses our. They are constructed to the same specifications as all of the parkway overpasses.

And these were indeed to limit usage to passenger cars.

Even today no commercial vehicle is permitted on the parkways. Your car can pull no trailer, your car cannot have any advertising logos on it, and you may have no overhead baggage attached to your car. Racks are permitted if they are OEM provided, but not the removable kind such as we used going on boy scout camping trips back in the 50s-60s. A van without "passenger" windows in it cannot be on the parkway.

I do not think that that was a racist move, but that is who the beast was built.

Besides you *can* get buses to Jones Beach and always could. They would meet the train in Freeport, and enter the Parkway at Merrick Road. There were no more overpasses from there on out.
