And, once again, this is why Trump won, and will win again. Robert Moses was a man of another era. Sure, he was a scumbag who hated public transportation, but many people were racist back then. It's just the way it was. To get insulted now in 2019 it's just some baby bulshit. |

Staten Island is the most Republican Borough, and because of Moses, they are forever relegated to buses and the ferry. They may know that much about him.It has nothing to do with their support of Trump. Their Congressional House Rep fell to a Democrat anyway. |

And once again, racism was just as wrong in the time of Robert Moses as it is now. The fact that "many people were racist" doesn't excuse his, or their, behavior. Why are we honoring that kind of vileness? |

I remember when that stretch of the Southern State Parkway from Exit 21 to Exit 17 was called "Blood Alley" because of its high accident rate. Of course, some of those crashes were merely the usual Long Island assholes driving like jerks, but countless others were down to the parkway's intentional design. I remember asking a state trooper about it many years ago, and he remarked that this particular section of the parkway brought houses for his co-workers, so much overtime did it generate.Moses did far more harm than good during his tenure, he knew it, and didn't care. Of note is the fact that from the end of WwII until he was finally forced to retire, the only new subway trackage to open in the city--not conversions of previous rail on the same route--were the extension to 179th Street in Queens, the East New York to Grant Avenue extension, the Church Ave. ramp, and Chrystie Street. That adds up to less than five miles, total. Meanwhile, Moses was doing wholesale, grab-bag destruction of entire neighborhoods. That says more about him than those glowing encomiums his apologists have penned in recent years... |

ENY -Grant Av IND extension lead to mere replaciement of the Fulton ST el and commandeering the LIRR Rockaway Beach Branch, hence shutting down Rego Park - Ozone Park LIRR - a net negative in route miles.Church Ave ramp lead to tearing down the residual Culver Shuttle, a net negative in route miles. Not until the Jay Street - Lawrence Street pedestrian transfer was implemented was that rectified, with Wall Street access from the Culver line restored. The transfer in Brooklyn with the 4th Ave BMT meant too much stair climbing. |

He constructed parkways, tunnels, beaches, zoos, parks, Shea Stadium, the New York Coliseum, the United Nations, Lincoln Center and much more.'OMG! What a horrible guy! |

And if so, how they plan on implementing wheelchair access. |

You call Super Blocks and other Projects "housing" ? They were displacements of what he destroyed. Most of his highways are safety disasters and also ban buses. Some were were financed by stillborn IND System-2 and System 3. Most of what else was built was inevitable. The beaches were built by oceanic long shore drift, not Robert Moses. All he did was build parking lots. He could have destroyed all 2 dozen communities along Fire Island, along with Greenwich Village, and East Village had he not been stopped. |

Some of the stuff in that article, like making pools in black areas have colder water than others, just sounds bizarre. And I know there used to be regular buses running to Jones Beach, so if he was trying to keep buses out, he didn't succeed. But certainly, at least one of the Robert Moses State Parks should have its name changed. Having two of them is ridiculous. |

You call Super Blocks and other Projects "housing" ? They were displacements of what he destroyed. At the time the projects were stated of the art, and they displaced slums with shared bathrooms and no hot water. At least back then they built housing for the working class and not just the rich. Private developments for the middle and upper classes were also built in the Le Corbusier style back then. Most of his highways are safety disasters and also ban buses. Some were were financed by stillborn IND System-2 and System 3. They were built in the 20s and 30s when that was state of the art. New York already had a major network of highways when other cities had nothing. The postwar highways, like the Clearview Expressway and the Staten Island Expressway were built to modern standards and many highways which would have conformed to modern standards were unbuilt. Most of what else was built was inevitable. This sort of inevitability argument can be used to dismiss the achievements of any historical figure. The beaches were built by oceanic long shore drift, not Robert Moses. All he did was build parking lots. Bullshit. Jones Beach is just as artificial as Central Park (although you might not be aware that that's artificial too). Maybe you should read about how it was built. He could have destroyed all 2 dozen communities along Fire Island No, they would have been changed to communities with car access. Less unique, so I'll give you that. along with Greenwich Village, and East Village had he not been stopped. The same way the FDR Drive destroyed the east side? Also, you're thinking of what's now called SoHo. There were no highways planned through the Village. I, for one, am convinced that those neighborhoods suffer worse for all of the interstate truck traffic that clogs the streets. |

It wasn't passive bigotry. He bulldozed working class neighborhoods, relocated them into Projects and super blocks, while he sent his Parkways on dangerous reverse curve to avoid County clubs.People who are members of exclusive country clubs have the power to force highways to be rerouted. It's as true now as it was then. It was either reroute the road, or not build it at all. Politicians today would get nothing done instead of coming up with imperfect solutions. Note that when it came time to build the LIE, Moses got his revenge by routing the LIE straight through. |

The overpasses on the way to Jones Beach were not constructed to keep buses our. They are constructed to the same specifications as all of the parkway overpasses. And these were indeed to limit usage to passenger cars. Even today no commercial vehicle is permitted on the parkways. Your car can pull no trailer, your car cannot have any advertising logos on it, and you may have no overhead baggage attached to your car. Racks are permitted if they are OEM provided, but not the removable kind such as we used going on boy scout camping trips back in the 50s-60s. A van without "passenger" windows in it cannot be on the parkway. I do not think that that was a racist move, but that is who the beast was built. Besides you *can* get buses to Jones Beach and always could. They would meet the train in Freeport, and enter the Parkway at Merrick Road. There were no more overpasses from there on out. ROAR |

The neighborhoods were fully functional, residential with commercial. He destroyed them. Super Blocks was merely to displace them out of the way of his freeways. And there are still fully functional neighborhoods with highways running through them. The BQE through Williamsburg and Greenpoint, the Belt through Sheepshead Bay, the Cross Island Parkway, the LIE, the HHP through Riverdale. It goes on. Meanwhile, neighborhoods with highways planned through them that were never built suffered anyway, like Bushwick and East New York. So maybe correlation doesn't imply causation and the decline of neighborhoods has multiple causes. |

All the beaches, including Jones, are barrier islands, and are in a constant state of moving. He built parking lots.He also built bridges, utility connections, dumped sand to expand them, and planted grasses to stabilize the dunes. Fire Island isn't wide enough to have much left had he put a Parkway down the middle of it. That would have been the end of them. The planned OP Extension would have been a super-2. There are still residential neighborhoods on Jones Beach Island east of Jones Beach. West Gilgo Beach even involved moving houses. And modern Fire Island provides access to fewer people than Jones Beach, or Robert Moses Park on Fire Island. Those are more egalitarian. |
