All the beaches, including Jones, are barrier islands, and are in a constant state of moving. He built parking lots.He also built bridges, utility connections, dumped sand to expand them, and planted grasses to stabilize the dunes. Fire Island isn't wide enough to have much left had he put a Parkway down the middle of it. That would have been the end of them. The planned OP Extension would have been a super-2. There are still residential neighborhoods on Jones Beach Island east of Jones Beach. West Gilgo Beach even involved moving houses. And modern Fire Island provides access to fewer people than Jones Beach, or Robert Moses Park on Fire Island. Those are more egalitarian. |
