Re: NY Daily News: Robert Moses’ Name Should Be Removed from Public Works

I remember when that stretch of the Southern State Parkway from Exit 21 to Exit 17 was called "Blood Alley" because of its high accident rate. Of course, some of those crashes were merely the usual Long Island assholes driving like jerks, but countless others were down to the parkway's intentional design. I remember asking a state trooper about it many years ago, and he remarked that this particular section of the parkway brought houses for his co-workers, so much overtime did it generate.

Moses did far more harm than good during his tenure, he knew it, and didn't care. Of note is the fact that from the end of WwII until he was finally forced to retire, the only new subway trackage to open in the city--not conversions of previous rail on the same route--were the extension to 179th Street in Queens, the East New York to Grant Avenue extension, the Church Ave. ramp, and Chrystie Street. That adds up to less than five miles, total. Meanwhile, Moses was doing wholesale, grab-bag destruction of entire neighborhoods. That says more about him than those glowing encomiums his apologists have penned in recent years...
