It was not completely uninhabitable.Yes, which is what I said. DOT punching Seventh Avenue through did some damage "DOT" did not exist in 1917. It has since gentrified very nicely and very nice along that waterfront with that urban cancer gone. Meaning it's now reserved exclusively for the very rich, and to hell with the people of the rest of the city. Many cities are tearing down their elevated highways, Seattle's Alaskan Way being the latest. Seattle's Alaskan Way was completely replaced with an underground highway, New York's West Side Highway wasn't. Niagara Falls is a poor example because it is a declining city without much need for routing traffic through, so the RM Parkway can be removed without much traffic impact. That's similarly true of uncompleted stubs like the old Embarcadero Freeway in San Francisco, despite San Francisco being a busy city. |
