suggestions for first LIRR or Metro North ride

Posted by JRR4 on Sun Sep 8 11:42:21 2019

This week I'll be in NYC and like to try something different for me. I've never ridden anything in/out of NYC but the MTA subway and would like to try something new, perhaps a round trip LIRR or Metro North ride. Something maybe a few hours round trip. Suggestions for a newbie?

My vote would be Poughkeepsie and back. Or save time and just go to Peekskill, and have time for something else. Get a window seat on the west side of the train. I think (someone else should verify) that there is also a railfan window on the very south end of the train (it's a diesel whose engine is always on the north end).

I meant Beacon, not Peekskill. On weekends it allows you to return back to NY on the train prior to the one you would catch if you went all the way to Pgh. And the river gets less interesting north of Beacon.

I used to do trips of precisely that length after school. Here are the fun ones I remember:
MNRR to Croton-Harmon (nice view of the Hudson river, and Croton Harmon station is practically in the railyard).
MNRR to Stamford (fastest trackage on MNRR is the express as you pass Harrison, Mamaroneck and Larchmont).
LIRR express to Babylon (if you take a diesel one way and electric the other, you'll likely get a completely different route each direction).
LIRR to Long Beach
LIRR to West Hempstead, grab a bite at White Castle (if it's still there), walk or take a bus to Hempstead, return on the Hempstead Branch.

As an aside, if you want to do NJT, go for Rahway.

The landscape gets more boring after Beacon, though not sure what freight rail and yard activity you might see at Pgh.

If your thinking of some nice food places I would suggest getting off at Cold Spring. There are several food places within easy walking distance of the station including "Hudson Hills" which has some intersting dishes. The is a restaurant located in the former train depot. It worthwhile checking out but the service leaves something to be desired. The staff is friendly enough but the server tends to dissapear into the mountains after she takes your oder. (I speak from experience). Cold Spring is situated in between two mountains and one can sit on the pier and enjoy the view.

Beacon has some good restaurants including Brothers Trattoria and the Yankee Clipper. However there are no food establishments anywhere near the station. They all require a long walk uphill.

I can't fully testify to the food, but Cold Spring does have a VERY nice view of the Hudson (and the West Shore freight line :-)). At the station, you have to walk away from Manhattan-bound side (the Poughkeepsie-bound side leads to the town, which isn't as interesting as used to be, IMHO) and just walk a couple of blocks until you reach the landing which juts out onto the Hudson.

Otherwise, I also recommend going to Poughkeepsie. The station is historic, and if you really need to tide yourself over, there is newsstand food. :-)

LION recommends a trip on MNRR to Heartsdale to visit Enrico's Bakery, just a few steps away from the station.

I was in a conversation with a friend in Hamburg, we were talking about Berliners and he showed an awful picture of a jelly donut. I'd not go to germany to get one, but I googled Jelly Donuts and way down near the bottom were the donuts that I remembered from when I was a kid. (Well, I am still a kid, really) were the donuts that Stern's Bakery used to make.

WTH... If you ride out to Coney Island for a hot doge, which are nowhere near as good as they were before Super Storm Sandy, Then why not go to Heartsdale for some donuts.

FWIW, if you're going up to Poughkeepsie, if you're bored and have some cash to spare, ride Metro North one way and Amtrak the other way. That way it's a slightly more interesting loop, and you get the comfort of an Amfleet. :-)

FWIW, some of my former coworkers are or were former Hempstead village residents, and the bus terminal was a bit of a running joke for them. It's not some horrible place where you're going to be murdered, but your likelihood of seeing a crackhead and aggressive panhandlers is somewhat high compared to say, Mineola.

LIRR Jamaica to Atlantic Terminal, Brooklyn. It’s a short trip but one loaded with early LIRR history. The line has been running for over 100 years.

Interesting things to see on the line are the following.

1) “Boland’s Landing” - The short, wooden platform that only LIRR employees use.

2) The abandoned Woodhaven station, closed in 1976. This station replaced a station that was at grade in 1942, after much of the surface LIRR line that ran on Atlantic Avenue was replaced by a 2-track tunnel. The station used to function as a transfer point to the LIRR Rockaway line Woodhaven station until that service ended in 1962. The Woodhaven station in the tunnel looks like an IND subway station, down to the style of tiling.

3) In the same area, you can see the trackway turnouts that used to connect the Atlantic Avenue tunnel to the elevated LIRR Rockaway line tracks. Today the mouth of the tunnel and it’s adjacent area are used for parking by a school bus company.

4) The tunnel ride itself - the tunnel is arrow-straight from Boland’s Landing to East New York, and LIRR M-7 trains have hit 70 mph in the tunnel!

5) The East New York LIRR Station - runs at surface level and has the roadway of Atlantic Avenue running above it. Some ornate ironwork remains.

6) The elevated line and Nostrand Avenue station - the line runs elevated, subway style, above Atlantic Avenue, giving you a good look at central Brooklyn.

7) Atlantic Terminal - renovated, brightly lit station that directly connects to several subway lines and lies beneath the Atlantic Terminal mall. The Barclays Center is directly across the street.

This requires a certain amount of planning. To really appreciate it (especially the turnouts and Woodhaven Blvd station) you need to be looking out the front of first car, and that pretty much means an M3, where the first car is open and the front rows are not roped off. If you can get the chance to do this, it's worth it, but realize that your efforts may be in vain if there are no M3s available from Atlantic.

One can see the underground Woodhaven station from the side windows if highly focused on the task. If the ticket collector hits you just as you are passing the station, you'll miss it. Going eastbound, the turnout is a cue that the station is next; the sound of the train is a bit different passing the turnout. The station has only a dim light or two of its own, so it may be a bit hard to make out much detail though, and the trains do pass quite fast, as others have noted. I don't recall ever being in the front of an M-1 or M-3 going through there, but that probably is more interesting.

There's a public-facing timetable for Boland's Landing and from the brief glimpse I caught out the window of a passing train it seems at least one platform has street access. Has anyone just gone to Boland's Landing and tried to catch a train as if it was no big deal? I got an M3 on a weekend and rode for free (due to LIRR cross-honouring for cancelled J train).

I've taken to hanging out around Penn at rush hour to scrounge an M3, and so far I've caught a RFW to Port Washington, Long Beach, and Huntington. I might try Atlantic next time I get a chance (hoping for West Hempstead!) but unfortunately, I only rarely have the time to go railfanning the LIRR during rush hour and with the dark half of the year fast approaching my peak-fanning will have to be placed on hold until April-ish. Here's hoping the M3s survive until 2024 after all!

How has it been with T/O interaction (if any)? Are you able to fully enjoy the RFW or are you working around open cab doors or unhappy C/Rs (on Metro North they've told me to move away), etc?

It could have been Emiliano's. It was a small older style store as opposed to a larger restaurant. I do remember Perry St. as we were looking for a spot to chow down, not knowing the landscape of Poughkeepsie.

There is two Italian restaurants , one up road at south end of platform and other in mini mall in old plumber wholesale , plus there is River Station.

It could have been Emiliano's. It was a small older style store as opposed to a larger restaurant. I do remember Perry St. as we were looking for a spot to chow down, not knowing the landscape of Poughkeepsie. That was the last time I rode an SPV-2000.
