I agree, but Mitch doesn’t and seems to believe in the God of the Gaps.

According to NYCSubway.org, where the image came from, it was taken May 23, 2004.

The station has become a lot more dingy since then.

Not really - if you look at the most recent photos of the station on NYCSubway.org you can see that the station has further deteriorated. And the most recent photos are from 2010 - I'm sure things have gotten worse since then.

And I thought it was pretty run down and dingy when I rode the Culver shuttle to 9th ave. once, during the spring of 1968 (51 years ago, hah!)

The lower level was rehabbed about 2 years ago,,all the original porcelain signs were removed and disposed of. Several steel beams and station columns were replaced,,various florescent light fixtures were hung. The station platform was cleaned up on both sides. C3/4 tracks are utilized daily by work trains. Track repairs were being made to C1 and C2 track but they were still out of service. The original track bed remains since 1916. Station Security enhancements are in place.

re: all the original porcelain signs were removed and disposed of.

Yet another sad instance of the MTA trashing its own history.

Several of these signs could have been mounted somewhere on the revenue platforms or in the fare control area as heritage exhibits.

Or, the remainder of these original signs could have been offered for sale by the Transit Museum towards its operating costs.

9th Avenue lower always looked dingy and abandoned. All the Culver Shuttle stations were allowed to basically fall apart between 1955 and 1975. I last rode the 'SS' in 1974. The platform lights at 13th Avenue were out. I'm surprised that the shuttle lasted in service until 1975.

could be, but I'm sure someone on this board wouuld have heard and posted something about any more, or remaining, porcelaine signs being sold or in storage for sale at the museum.

When I lived in Bensonhurst back in 86-87 the whole 4th Ave line was skeletonized. Not one rush hour passed without the West End and Sea Beach being blown up something awful. Bunchups and Ns being sent down West End were the norm. IIRC it was when they had multiple trains right behind each other: 1 would go local; 1 down the express; the others sent to Lower and then back north.

To say Lower was disgusting is being kind.

When I was a M/M in late 1969/early 1970 the 4 Av exp tks were also skeletonized to install type VIII (all concrete) roadbed. After a few years, the all concrete roadbed started to deteriorate the same as the type VIII roadbed on the 6 Av exp tks S/O 34/6. In the mid 1980s, roadbeds in both locations were replaced with modified type II which is what caused those delays.

It was a bigger mess in the 80s because not only was 4th Ave ripped up, the north side of the Manny B drama was also happening. When I was working in Manhattan or going to GCT to get to Stamford, I was usually en route early enough that it was usually just about 10-15 minutes of delays. My typical trip home in the PM, however, usually was 90-120 minutes from 34th/Bway to 25th Ave. Sometimes longer.
