It's officially announced: F Express service in Brooklyn

Posted by Allan on Wed Jul 10 10:32:31 2019

It is only 2 N/B trains in AM Rush and 2 S/B in PM Rush but I guess it has to start somewhere.

MTA NYC Transit Adding Limited F Express Service for Brooklyn Residents with Longest Commutes

Four Rush Hour Trains Per Day Will Run Express to Speed Trips for Thousands of Commuters

MTA New York City Transit announced today that it will offer a limited express service on the F line beginning September 2019 to speed up the commutes of thousands of customers who use the subway line in Brooklyn during the morning and evening rush hours.

“We’re adding some limited express service to the F line in Brooklyn because our customers asked, and we listened,” said MTA NYC Transit President Andy Byford. “It will benefit thousands of commuters by getting them to their destinations faster instead of sitting waiting as their train makes all local stops.”

NYC Transit will introduce limited peak-direction, a.m. and p.m. rush hour express service on the F line between Church Av and Jay St-MetroTech, stopping at 7 Av, beginning in September 2019. The F line currently operates local service on a 26-station segment from Bway-Lafayette St to Coney Island-Stillwell Av, the longest local service-only portion of any subway line in the system. Southern Brooklyn customers traveling to and from Midtown Manhattan can spend 50 minutes or more in each direction as trains provide service to every stop along the route. More than half of F customers affected by the express service enhancement will benefit from a faster ride, with some shaving about an hour off their commute times each week.

To balance ridership needs at local F stations in Brooklyn with the new express service benefitting the southern portion of the line, two Manhattan-bound trains between 7 a.m. and 7:30 a.m., and two Coney Island-bound trains between 5 p.m. and 5:40 p.m., will operate express between Church Av and Jay St-MetroTech. These particular times were chosen to benefit the largest number of customers while limiting impact and wait times for other Brooklyn riders of the F line. To accommodate the new express service, local service schedules will be adjusted to ensure even train spacing during the brief windows when express service will operate.

The express trains will be identified as F-Diamond (an F inside a diamond), similar to the design convention used on other express trains.

Wow.

Any chance Bergen Street lower will be rehabbed and reopened as part of this service or is it a dead dog?

No. It says "stopping at 7th Ave," not "stopping at 7th Ave and Bergen Street."

We'll see how it goes. I'd say the ideal is that an express passes exactly one local in front of it, "cleanly," such that little-to-no conflict occurs at rejoining points (e.g. Jay St northbound). Extra points if the two meet up at 7th Ave for passenger transfers, and extra points if the F express departs/arrives (depending on direction) simultaneously with the G at Church Ave.

Won't work. The conductor will waste so much time telling people that the train is going express that it will offset any benefit.

Two trains each way? Seems hardly worth the effort.

If it's just two trains, it's misleading to announce "F Express service in Brooklyn".

Something like this will cause more confusion, and disappointment, than anything else.

and hardly announcement worthy.

It's false advertising in a way.

Disappointment for folks looking for express service from Church to Kings Hwy.

No, it’s not misleading. They’re saying “F Express Service in Brooklyn.”

I doubt if these are 2 additional trains in the AM and PM, rather 2 trains each rush hour rerouted to the express track because once they merge with the E, the express tracks are already at capacity.

More importantly, looking at the AM rush, once the new schedules are published, it could give the G even spacing of intervals out of Church Ave. CURRENTLY trains during the F target time of 7 to 7:30, G trains leave Church Ave. at the following times: 6:58, 7:06 (8 minute gap), 712 (6), 7:21 (9), 7:30 (9), 7:35 (5).

As you can see, G trains do not have evenly spaced intervals. Sometimes a given G train could have 2 F's in between it and its' leader, and sometimes just 1 F between it and its' leader.

For example, when I worked the G right before retirement 5 1/2 years ago, I made a 7:07/Church, my leader was 10 minutes ahead of me (6:57) with 2 F's between us and my follower was a 7:13, 6 minutes behind me with just 1 F between us. The result was most of the time I left a minute or 2 late (by the time the second F left the station, signals cleared and I got on my train, charged it up and left). The result was a hellish trip with a packed train by Bed/Nost along with long station dwell times. Because of the long gap it resulted in my follower catching up to me by Metropolitan.

It's a nice idea but with only 2 trains each way they wouldn't want to go thru the effort.

Think about it - how many passengers who use the Bergen St station even know that there is a lower level station? I would say at most 1% (and those would be older people - or railfans).

I guess the two trains each way is a demo of sorts to either justify more service later or else say: "we tried and it just didn't work."

Almost all of the rush hour special services I can think of had at least four or five intervals each way. The QB and NX immediately after Christie Street, the Fourth Avenue and Brighton Bankers.

Since the target audience is Brooklyn they could possibly add <F>s without buggering up Queens Blvd. by making 96-2nd the north terminal. There's extra capacity there until the T starts running.
