Tuscarora Almanac for January 2

Posted by IRTRedbirdR33 on Wed Jan 3 07:10:06 2018

This posting is a day late but it contains some interesting service changes.

Tuscarora Almanac – January 2, 1973 – The Book of First and Last Runs

Tuscarora Dispatch No. 8
January 1973 Services Changes

The effective date of the schedule change was December 31, 1972 which was a Saturday. Monday January 2 saw the most widespread service changes since November, 1967.

As is proper at the turn of the year we said goodbye to some old friends, the “QJ” and the “KK”. We welcomed their replacements, the “J” and the “K” to the subway fraternity. There were major changes to the “A”, “E” and the “M” trains as well.

Prior to the change the “QJ” had run between 168th Street-Jamaica and Coney Island M-F 6 AM to 8 PM as the Jamaica-Nassau St-Brighton Local/Express. At all other times the “QJ” would run between 168th Street and Broad Street. The “KK” had run between 168th Street-Jamaica and 57th Street-6th Avenue as the Jamaica-Broadway/Brooklyn-6th Avenue Local during rush hours only. The “QJ” ran express on the Broadway-Brooklyn Line and both the “QJ” and “KK” provided skip-stop service on the Jamaica Line in the direction of traffic.

This was at a time when each subway route had its own color so the “J” and “K” inherited the colors of the routes that they replaced; black and dark blue respectively.
The “J” would now run at all times between 168th Street-Jamaica and Broad Street at all times. There would be express operation on the Broadway-Brooklyn Line during rush hours in the direction of traffic. Skip-stop operations on the Jamaica Line would continue but it would be provided by two sets of “J” trains. Some would make “A” stops will some would make “B” stops and both would serve “AB” stations. It was never quite clear how one would differentiate between the two except through PA announcements when they worked.

The “K” would run between Eastern Parkway and 57th Street-6th Avenue during rush hours. In the early AM there would also be three put-ins from Rockaway Parkway.
Prior to the change the “M” had run between Metropolitan Avenue / Ridgewood and Broad Street M-F 6 AM to 8 PM. These trains run express between Myrtle Avenue and Marcy Avenue during rush hours in the direction of peak traffic. Under the new schedule “M” trains would be extended from Broad Street to Coney Island M-F 6 AM to 8 PM. They would provide local service on the Brighton Line in place of the “QJ”. Express service on the Broadway-Brooklyn Line would continue. Night time and weekend shuttle service would continue as well.

The IND Fulton Street and Rockaway Lines would see major changes as well.

“A” trains would continue to run between 207th Street and Lefferts Boulevard at all times. The Far Rockaway a service would now run seven days a week from about 6 AM to 11 PM. (Prior to this “A” train had not run to the Rockaways during the rush hours) “A” train would now also operate express on the Fulton Street Line between Hoyt Street and Euclid Avenue for the first time since 1959.

“E” trains had run between 179th Street-Jamaica and the World Trade Center at all times except rush hours. These trains ran express in Queens and local in Manhattan. During rush hours service was extended to Euclid Avenue, Rockaway Park and Far Rockaway with express operation both in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Effective with the schedule change non-rush hour service to the WTC was unchanged. Rush hour “E” trains would run to Euclid Avenue and Rockaway Park. They would run express in Manhattan and local on the Fulton Street Line.

Although it had occurred earlier in the year both Rockaway Shuttles services, the late night round-robin and the daytime Broad Channel-Rockaway Park run were designated as “A” trains.
Some minor changes saw the “F” running express midday between Parsons Boulevard and Forest Hills and the restoration of Sunday express service on the Fourth Avenue Line by “N” trains.

restoration of Sunday express service on the Fourth Avenue Line by “N” trains.

Would you or anyone happen to know the last significant all-day deviation between Saturday and Sunday in regular service patterns? (Not counting the headways, GOs, no early-morning stuff like the old 3 line shuttle bus in Harlem). What was the last Saturday-Sunday difference in terms of routing/pattern to go?

And with these changes came the first revision [copyrighted 1972(2)] to the "Vignelli map" which was initially issued after the HH Rockaway line was discontinued in about fall 1972. This cinched that there was some error in the Graphics Standards Manual of 1970, or revision, or something. Because the following colors were used by line:
- PMS 130 Yellow - 6, N (looked on some maps like PMS 109 may have been used, as PMS 130 on uncoated paper stock was more orangeish)
- PMS 165 Orange - 1, 7, D, EE
- PMS 185 Red - 2, QB
- PMS 239 Magenta - 4, AA, F
- PMS 300 Blue - A, K (ex KK)
- PMS 311 Blue (not 312) - 3, 8, E, M
- PMS 355 Green (not 354) - CC, GG, RR, SS
- PMS Black / PMS 401(? - might have been 400?) Grey - 5, B, J (ex QJ), LL

The distinction about the two disputed colors highlighted in bold is important, as it was PMS 355 Green that would be used after 1979 for the Lexington Avenue IRT lines, while PMS 312 was used for the JFK Express whose blue was a shade darker than the 3, 8, E and M's color as up to 1978.

I would think that the effective date for the schedule change would have been January 1, 1973 since the operations and payroll week for the NYCT is Sunday so the pick wouldn't have gone into effect till then.

IIRC, on the route portion of the map, the GG was a lighter shade of green.

Wasn't the daytime Broad Channel/Rockaway Park designated as the E?

I have vintage Pantone swatches from "the era" (that is, c.1973), and I can tell you that the green on both sides matched more PMS 355 than PMS 354. Slightly darkening that, plus slightly lightening the light blue routes (3, 8, E and M) would, I presume, have been of help for those seeing those maps in dimly lit stations (especially along certain sections of the IND). Plus being more in line with what was printed on the rollsigns of the newer cars (i.e. R40 onwards).

I think the last to go was the (4), which ran I believe all day on Sundays to Utica instead of Flatbush before becoming all Utica/New Lots when the 2/5 and 3/4 were switched in 1983.

The N and 6 started out as a kind of gold or honey-color (sorry, I don't know Pantone numbers), with the letter or number on them being white like all the others. I think that continued onto the Vignelli map. When the switch was made to trunk-line colors, is that when the Broadway line became a brighter yellow than the N had been? Did they go to black letters on the yellow bullets then, or did that come later? Likewise, is that when the L or LL (the only service on its trunk) changed from black to gray?

The 1979 color switches would be when the BMT Broadway lines would have had their letters in black. Also, according to the 1980 standards update, not only LL but also the two "S's' (42nd Street and Franklin Avenue) were designated PMS 430 Grey. It was around 1987 when the Broadway trunk lines' color was shifted from PMS 130 (which was more amberish) to PMS 116 - and the Eighth Avenue's, from PMS 300 to PMS 286.

Under the original color schemes developed in 1967, all the greens were the same and closer to the green currently used on the 4, 5, and 6 bullets.

The 4 ran Sat and Sun to Utica from about 600AM to around 1100PM or whenever the 3 stopped running when it went to Flatbush during midnight hours until the south terminals of the Bkln ends of the lines were swapped in 1983

The reason that the Bway colors were changed to the black on yellow was that when the new color scheme was adopted, the vendor who supplied the original colors for the N and the 6 was unavailable and the new vendor was unable to supply the exact same color so yellow was used. The first few signs that were installed were white on yellow but it proved too hard to read so the letters were changed to black.

Besides, by the time I started driving their 1973 Buick Century (purchased brand-new) in 1985, there was very little left on its AM-only radio besides WCBS, WINS, and WPAT... so 'till I got my own car, I also listened to a lot of WPAT.

It was. The 7:55 to Brooklyn. Always cancelled for car shortage.

There was actually a party on the train when enough M1's arrived to return the train.

Oh no, not at all. The CC replaced the E in Bklyn and Rockaway Park in 8/76. The TA didn't start using the H for the Rockaway Park Shuttle until either '85 or '86-another nine or ten years later.
