The Gates are often open, and I doubt they have a method of counting the large portion of the ridership which has used them. |

Suspect some of that may have been that many people who might have used it were on vacation as the first two weeks of January is vacation time for many who don't have kids in particular, especially those who had to work the week between Christmas and New Year's.The week of January 23 (with no holidays and everyone back from vacation for the most part) should be the first true test of the SAS. |

What I'd like to see: turnstile counts for the Lexington Ave stations at 68th, 77th, 86th and 96th, then have those compared to this time last year. I suspect they will have remained relatively unchanged. I think the SAS is more a draw off the east side bus lines than the IRT. |

Plenty of folks have evening activities where they did not take the same route home as they did in the mornings. So the issue does not have to be one of "less convenient" but simply a reflection of our complicated lives. Plus these stations under Second Avenue have only been open 1 month. They have not provided a precise definition of "enough." Mr. AlM is among this group, insofar as Hunter College being on break. I'll keep posting until the end of February. Phase 3 would have served people who actually Really need a east side subway... It would be beneficial to determine what was wrong with the estimates before embarking on ambitious (or not so ambitious) SAS extensions. Perhaps, a better estimate would predict a similar patronage shortfall for the LES. |

Anyone looking at predicted ridership needs to understand that with very few exceptions, there is a "credibility" lag between service opening and serious usage. Both WMATA and BART were "underused early on, and we see today that they are overwhelmed by ridership today. |

However, I did notice fewer people on the downtown 6 at 59 St when I was there last Thursday. I typically have had to let a train or two pass before I could squeeze my pot belly in there around 8:40 AM. Last week I easily fit onto the first train that arrived with room to spare. This is obviously attributable to the Q. |

I did notice fewer people on the downtown 6 at 59 St...The crowding you previously experienced was due to not operating a sufficient number of trains to meet the demand. That crowding could have been eliminated by running more trains on the Lex. I compared the operating cost of operating more trains vs. the capital and operating cost of the SAS in another thread. The SAS operating costs are lower but it will take nearly 1000 years to recover the capital costs. Mr. randyo noted the MTA's reluctance to operate more trains was due to lack of rolling stock. There's no signal or track limit to operating 30 tph on the Lex local tracks. They used to do it. |

Growing up in the Bronx in the 1970's I definitely remember #6 trains parked along the middle track on the elevated portions of the line. This was not the only line that parked subway trains along the visible portions of their routes. I also remember it being reported that the TA had 7,000 subway cars.Now I know that there have been changes in the subway car consist - newer cars, some longer cars, changes in train yard storage, and other things. Even various changes in the numbers and kinds of train routes. Now the TA basically reports about 6,000 or so subway cars. Mike |

There are problems for direct comparison because the 75 footers are equivalent to 1.25 60 footers. However, comparison is easier for the IRT because car lengths have remained the same. You could probably get a reasonable post WWII yearly count by going to the nycsubway.org site and reviewing the old and current fleet car pages. |

Not by half it seems.Perhaps if the MTA had built all 6 stations around the same time ? In Any case,the First segment should have been built from 63rd st South to Houston.. More riders...more transfers...connection to the CBD,Grand Central and other important Midtown destinations. Plus,a connection to the Chrystie st subway for Brooklyn would have ensured even distribution as a through service to Queens via Queens Blvd line...or a new station in Sunnyside. |
