Growing up in the Bronx in the 1970's I definitely remember #6 trains parked along the middle track on the elevated portions of the line. This was not the only line that parked subway trains along the visible portions of their routes. I also remember it being reported that the TA had 7,000 subway cars.

Now I know that there have been changes in the subway car consist - newer cars, some longer cars, changes in train yard storage, and other things. Even various changes in the numbers and kinds of train routes.

Now the TA basically reports about 6,000 or so subway cars.
