Washington Metro criticized for not extending hours last night due to Nationals Game

From Washington DC Patch:

WASHINGTON, DC — National League Division Series, Game 5: the Washington Nationals are trying to battle back at Nats Park to win the series and head to Chicago for a chance at the World Series, and fans are starting to stream for the exits.

Why? Because the stadium announced that the last Metro train was about to leave.

"Nats' fans are streaming out of the stadium to catch the last Metro," tweeted New York Times columnist Juliet Macur at 11:10 p.m. Thursday, when the game was still an hour from being over. "And just when the Nats need them the most. Good job, DC."

In the past, Metro has extended its hours for late Nationals, Capitals or Wizards games -- but no more. Metro decided earlier this year that it would be moving up its closing time to midnight, and it would no longer offer those extended hours.

Nats fans certainly weren't happy with this new reality, chanting "Metro sucks" after the announcement went out over the loudspeaker.

Unfortunate story. Can you imagine that in NY at any one of the major stadium venues? Thank goodness, no.

But Metro won't have this issue again because LA won the game.

It clearly obvious to me that you folks haven't been paying attention to the goings on in WMATAland sense Paul Wiedefeld took over as General Manager. He made it perfectly clear to everybody up and down the political food chain that thing ware going to be done different in order to bail out the sinking ship that is Metrorail.

One of the first orders was eliminating extended service to allow maintenance of way to have more time to repair the decades of differed maintenance. In the past enterprises would pay WMATA for said extended service, Wiedefeld made it clear, there will be no extended service whether its payed for or not until the ship is righted.

As most here know I am one that has a great deal of admiration for what WMATA built over the past 50 years. It bring tears to my eyes the see the depths that WMATA has sunk to because of the attitude of the political leadership to decide to provide service at all cost. Well, they have paid that cost, in both lives and trust.

It is my believe that he will restore that trust even if he has to step on some toes and piss a few people off along the way. Wiedefeld in my opinion is the best General Manager WMATA has ever had sense Jackson Graham was named the first General Manager in 1967.

What should have been done was to make clear to MLB and the TV partners is due to the need of METRO to close at Midnight because of repairs that clearly can not afford to be delayed any further under any circumstances, all playoff games at Nationals Park (including World Series games) must start no later than 6:40 PM so that if you do get a long game like last night, you can still get everyone on METRO by midnight (last night was the longest nine-inning game in MLB history regular OR postseason I believe, but you can get 15+ inning games that easily run past four and a half hours). The problem is of course, doing that PO's CEOs, COOs and CFOs on the west coast where if that were in effect Thursday night, Dodgers-Nats would have started at 3:40 PM on the west coast and many people likely would have left work as early as 1:30 to make sure they were home in time for the game.

Short of that, perhaps whoever was in position to do so could have issued an Executive Order compelling METRO to run service as late as necessary for the Nationals game.

I wonder if Nats players were affected by everyone leaving when they did due to the length of the game?

You do realize that most people watch games on television and most of the revenue is from television? And that game time is based on what's most convenient for letting the most fans watch on TELEVISION?

What do executives have to do with anything? Just some class warfare bullshit?

As Spider-Pig said, first pitch is bases on the number of screens tuned in not the number of folks that came through the gate.

The money is made from the charge coupled device scattered around the park not the retinas sitting in the seats.

But is a stadium nothing more than a giant TV studio? Why even open the gates for people to watch if they just don't matter? Why not just add canned cheering to the TV and radio audio and fill the stands with cardboard cutouts of fans? The people who go to the stadium are actually paying to see the game, and in most cases, paying dearly. They really need to be treated better, though if, as has been suggested, maintenance has been deferred so badly, perhaps this is simply a matter of the chickens coming home to roost. Wallyhorse actually has a few good points there; I'm just not sure how to accommodate badly deferred maintenance without moving toward the attitude of, "We could keep these trains moving and these tracks maintained if only we didn't have to worry about these stupid passengers boarding and exiting all the time..."

Or, we are au courant des affaires, but we have differing opinions. Agree Wiedenfeld so far seems to be a more realistic GM. That said, expecting riders to use Metro to the game without a ride home is really giving them the middle finger. Heck, Caltrain actually runs post-revenue trains for San Jose sports events.
The Dodgers have resolved the issue for this year.

Indeed, the attendees are treated poorly in the current state of MLB (or any of the other gladiator sports)
I do, however, side w/Wallyhorse on the issue of not shafting them by failing to provide post game service. From Metro's POV the Dodgers have helped out.

For the 100th aniversary at Fenway park, the Red Sox vs Yankees opener was held at 6PM. If baseball can do it for a special occasion, surely they can do it to accommodate fans.

That said, this just tells the fans they should drive to the stadium next time.

WMATA didn't fail to provide post game service. Those of us that have been paying attention know that WMATA closes their doors at midnight now regardless of when the last out is made. That being said, knowing that a first pitch after 8:00 PM will likely place the 9th inning in the AM should know to plan their return transportation before entering the park.

For purposes of national ratings, and the advertising dollar, MLB schedules as many playoff and World Series games into prime time.

The fans in the seats don't count because if one guy has a complaint some other guy will gladly buy that ticket. These tickets are very expensive and the resell value (scalper ) is even higher.

If MLB really "cared" about the fans all games would be day games in most markets so they don't freeze their Fannie's off.

"... they should drive next time."

That's what I will need to do today. I have to go to Forest Hills, not too far a walk from the train station. I'd love to take the train, but Babylon line service is only hourly this weekend, and since I have no idea when I'll be done, I don't feel like taking a chance that I'll just miss the train and have to hang around almost an hour waiting for the next train, or possibly take the bus home. So instead, I'll drive there, and hopefully I'll find a parking space somewhere closer than the courthouse parking garage in Kew Gardens.

In the 40 plus years that Metrorail has been open, WMATA has never extended hours without one of two thing taking place first.
  • Enterprise first requesting extended service
  • Enterprise paying for requested extended service.
Extended and or expanded service for annual charity events, Independence Day and Presidential Ingratiation have been typically included in the FY budget.

The only exception was the ingratiation of Jimmy Carter. Back then WMATA's 4.5 mile Red line operated Monday > Friday from 6:00 AM > 8:00 PM, the ingratiation committee paid WMATA to extend service to midnight.

This time, you might be right, depending upon how much clout politicians have with the WMATA brass. A major league baseball playoff game is that important, and the bad publicity is that bad. You can bet that if something like that happened in New York, Gov. Cuomo would be all over the MTA, unless a blizzard or a hurricane were approaching. And if Gov. Cuomo didn't say anything, Senator Schumer would be in front of a podium somewhere.

Continuing to justify my contempt for the system.

I have more contempt for WMATA then you might believe.

The difference is I live in Realville and realize that sacrifices need and should be made to get the house in order.

At sometime in the future all the suits that have convinced themselves it can't be done will be replaced with new blood that will be convinced that the impossible is in fact possible.

During the formative years of WMATA the folk that ran the agency were of the latter.

Trying for sarcasm. I grew up around DC decades ago, but discovered how good transit could be spending summer times at my Granddad's in Chicago. CTA had a very comprehensive "Owl" service. I deeply resent the BS midnight closure routine of the "new starts" systems--BART Metro, most of the lightrail routes. When I lived in Philly in 65, I learned how much better CTA was than PTC.

I make my living doing upgrades and repairs of residential electical installations; thus I claim at least some grasp of reality. That said as a DC raised person I am very unhappy with the subway that got built after I left for college and adulthood. Then I came west thinking that BART would be useful once it opened--just how late and how over budget would take a long discussion. What a sad excuse for a subway system. Maybe a Trabant on your scale, although they were the carpet innovators (lipstick on a pig which they finally gave up).

BART wasn't supposed to be a subway, it was supposed to be commuter rail of the future. However as Japan and Europe have illustrated, commuter rail of the future winds up looking a lot like a subway but with longer distances served.

BART wasn't supposed to be a subway, it was supposed to be commuter rail of the future.

It's basically Frankfurt/Stuttgart/Munich S-Bahn except because we do things the FRA way, we can't apply rapid transit techniques to mainline railway, so we ended up reinventing the wheel to do what the Germans do with regular tech.

commuter rail of the future winds up looking a lot like a subway but with longer distances served.

Minimizing staff, maximizing standing space, automating fare collection, and running more service further away from the core? We can't have this in America!

their PR guy said to me we're not the subway we're the Long Island. But, if one looks at rider stats, thedistantsuburban segments only get serious ridership in rush, whereas the inner East Bayand SF are busy all day like any urban subway. The new fleet will have 3 doors instead of 2, more standee space, more bike space, but also many new bells and whistles (I will be going to a display of one of the first production cars Sunday)

First subway trains under DC running with graffiti in service on trains and now this.

Washington Metro is now basically the NYC subway in the 70's.

WMATA was thinking along the same lines. however they chose to go closer to being urban transit but not all the way.

Both bart and WMATA in my opinion can't and shouldn't be compared to the urban rail transit systems built during the first half of the last century.
