The R32s that don't have working A/C, dirty, bad lighting signed wrong etc deserve a serious bitch slap from the riding taxpayer public. In other words, equiptment that not properly maintained should not be on the road. If the neccessary TLC needed to keep older equiptment running to expectations is there, then the riding clientele and most folks on this forum should be happy to see the R-32s geting it done. Bottom line, its nice to have the R-32s around this long, but if there in the game with the big boys, there expected to play. The older the patient, the more intense the care. |

They erected a wooden "column" (though it was many wooden members criss-crossed together) right next to the column to be replaced to support the horizontal member above, then they removed the old column (a composite column fabricated from several pieces riveted together), then they installed the new, solid, H-beam column. |

Probably because the priority for new car assignments was for the IRT and BMT mainlines rather than elevated lines that the TA would have liked to get rid of sooner than it did. I think what kept Myrtle around so long was the presence of the Bkln Navy Yard and when that ceased operations, ridership on Myrtle fell drastically. In the late 1950s/early 1960s there was talk of putting IRT Lo-Vs on Myrtle, but I suspect that even the minimal expense of relocating the tripcocks was ;probably deemed too expensive for the TA suits. |

In the 1950s, the Lo-Vs had battery running lamps installed to replace the kerosene deck lamps then in use on all prewar IRT equipment. When the LoVs were first restored, the battery running lights were removed and the Lo-Vs ran with retired kerosene lamps the way they did originally. The current sets of seal beam/taillights are removable like the kerosene lamps and hang on the brackets formerly used by the kerosene lamps. NYCT safety procedure requires all cars operating over the road to have seal beam headlights so the current arrangement has to be used unless the cars are in static display bin which case a set of kerosene lamps could be mounted. |

Upper West Side are hardly political neophytes, they have money, and they have had the oldest cars of the system, whatever they are, on the C for decades. The best they could do was to keep the R42's away as they had to stop at the 10 car markers due to conductor boards. |

Like I said, it's a tribute to how well the R32s were built that they are still very much serviceable, even after 51 years.Fact is, they have outlived the R38s, R40s, R44s and will likely outlive what's left of the R42s. Moves like that have been tried before.I remember when some R-10s were assigned to the E back in the late 70s, the locals screamed like hell. But back then, they had a point. Those R-10s clearly had their best years behind them. They were dimly lit, filthy, no A/C & could barely get out of their own way with rush hour crouds. Clearly begging for a rebuild. R-1/9s would clearly out perform them, if they were still around that is. |

However, I have wondered recently why C/R boards are needed for less than maximum length trains since when I was a C/R we didn’t need them On a full length train they are needed since the train takes the full length of the platform and it can be difficult for the C.r to determine if the train is properly berthed. On shorter trains there should be no problem determining of the train is fully in the station especially on lines like the G that only run 4 X 75 footers. |
