In the 1950s, the Lo-Vs had battery running lamps installed to replace the kerosene deck lamps then in use on all prewar IRT equipment. When the LoVs were first restored, the battery running lights were removed and the Lo-Vs ran with retired kerosene lamps the way they did originally. The current sets of seal beam/taillights are removable like the kerosene lamps and hang on the brackets formerly used by the kerosene lamps. NYCT safety procedure requires all cars operating over the road to have seal beam headlights so the current arrangement has to be used unless the cars are in static display bin which case a set of kerosene lamps could be mounted.
