The 70s: N Queens Blvd Express?

Did the N ever run express on Queens Blvd during its time on that line? I remember reading of a peak-direction local, reverse peak express arrangement, but cannot remember where I read that or any documentation now to that effect.

If not the N, was there ever a time when the Broadway service to Queens Blvd was a regularly scheduled express?

No. Local to Forest Hills. the original plan had it running to Parsons/Archer, but still local.

There's just no way you could run the N express with the E and F.

No to both questions.

When the N replaced the EE in 1976, the base service operated via the Manhattan Bridge so that N trains covered the old EE route between Canal Street and 71st-Continental-Forest Hills. In rush hours there were additional N trips to/from Forest Hills that turned at Whitehall Street to give lower Manhattan riders the same service that the EE formerly provided. Those trains turned in the center platform at Whitehall and opened doors on both sides. Believe that these were equipment that stored overnight at Jamaica Yard, and then was laid up midday at City Hall Lower and Canal Street middle tracks.

I recall that the N, during peak periods, operated express between Canal and 57th Streets as follows:

NB in the AM peak
SB in the PM peak

Yes. During this time the Broadway line had the weird distinction of having NO express service southbound during the AM and northbound during the PM. Between 7 & and 8 AM the southbound N runs out of Continental alternated between Coney Island and Whitehall st every 10 minutes. This was ALWAYS an issue at Prince St, as people always mixed up which train was what. If the train had no working PA, (a common occurrence before 1986) then you were screwed if you were uninformed.

The whole point of the 60th tunnel connection was to have a second local service on Queens Blvd. service, one that would gostraight to Manhattan.

And to increase QB capacity, of course.

The original plan was to sent the G and N to Archer. But that changed when the swap happened with the N and R before Archer opened!

The N-train running local along Queens Blvd lasted for about 10 years.

Actually there was express service on the Broadway line, in both directions, however it was limited. The express service was the rush hour QB trains.

The running of the QB in those days was indeed limited, with the reverse peak direction QB trains headed back to Brooklyn, making the usual stops. Whatever was sent up to 57th Street from Coney Island was simply sent back to Coney Island, making the usual stops.

All of this was gonna change with the switching of the terminals of the N and R trains in Queens, and a couple of decades of Manhattan Bridge repair work.

The map I had from 1985 stated that the QB (later the Q) was a peak direction only service, and that N trains operated express only in the peak direction to/from Brooklyn. BMT service in general seems like it was very confusing, with the peak direction Q, a similar arrangement with the Nassau/Bay Ridge peak direction R (mixing with the regular Broadway R), and the peak direction N to Whitehall.

There was no AM QB service downtown and no PM QB service northbound. In the AM, all service running downtown was local (round N, diamond N, RR) and the same uptown in the PM.

Most QB trains laid up either in Astoria middle or north of 57th St during the midday hours. One or two even ran to/from Astoria in service. IIRC, in 1985 there were only 6 of them in each direction, much like today's Z. Due to it's limited runs, I used to go out of my way to find one and remember each (rare) trip.

Service Change Posted: 02/14/2015 12:04PM

Due to track maintenance at Forest Hills-71 Av, the following service changes are in effect:

Northbound E Subway Line Icon and F Subway Line Icon trains are running local from Jackson Hts-Roosevelt Av to 75 Av.

Southbound R Subway Line Icon trains are running express from Forest Hills-71 Av to Queens Plaza.

Allow additional travel time.

The QB used to run into Manhattan around 3-4pm and I used to take it. It wasn't a scheduled run, except to make the southbound service. In the morning I used to see them running back to Brooklyn when I had classes that started at 10. I can't say what year this was and maybe they changed this at some point. And it is entirely possible that some trains were layed up elsewhere.

Whatever goes up, must come down.

Ah, thank you. That's what I must have read. The local/express breakup by direction was on the Broadway Line, not on Queens Blvd.

What do you suppose was the problem with the EE designation for the special Lower Manhattan N trains that they wanted to remove it? The double-letter elimination had not occurred yet, right?

The N and EE were basically merged into one service in 1976 to save car miles, car requirements, and crew costs by eliminating the overlap in the two lines between Canal and 57th Streets. The specific reason given was to save operating costs. 1976 was the year after the 1975 fiscal meltdown.

The Whitehall Street N trips were created to provide direct Lower Manhattan service for rush hour travelers to and from Forest Hills. The double letters weren't eliminated till 1987, but it would have been very confusing to "eliminate" the EE base service in favor of the N and then use the EE designation for a rush-only service.

I suppose, but a similar thing was done in 2004 with the W. It went from being a full-time Broadway Express service to a part-time Broadway Local service, with a different southern terminus.

The EE would have gone from full time to part time but kept its routing in tact.

Not arguing anything, just pointing it out.

Although in the AM, returning QBs ran light back to CIY unless they were needed to cover a Gap in S/B N service, N/B QBs only ran light between CIY and Dekalb where they entered service and ran in service to 57 St. If I recall from my scheduling days, the first 2 QBs in the AM ran all the way to Astoria where they became S/B RRs operating to Canal St and laying up. In the PM, those trains ran N/B as RRs to Astoria where they became the last 2 S/B QBs.

Having selected rush hour Ns operating between Ctl and Whl isn’t too much different from the practice of having selected rush hour Rs operating between Ctl and either Canal or Whl. They are merely short turn trains operating part of the main service.

It's a testament to how transit demand has changed that in 2010, there was really nothing implemented to replace the W south of Canal, even during rush hour.

Yep, and signage was installed for this service at Forest Hills and Union Tpke. It had the N running weekdays (when the N ran to Queens) and the G all other times.

I agree. Traveling south on an N approaching Canal, you have two very different next stops in either City Hall or Pacific Street!

double letters were eliminated in 1984-85 actually. the MTA was planning to eliminate double letter routes as early as 1981.

Which means that if there were two local services going to Forest Hills on weekends, it would not be possible again this weekend.

I checked Weekender on MTA.info and did not even see this GO listed but a relative called me today to tell me it's on and making life hard to get from Rego Parkistan to NYC.

The G and N trains were originally supposed to go to Jamaica Center, while the E and F would have remained going towards 179th Street. In the original service plan the N train was to run between Jamaica Center and Stillwell Ave-Coney Island during weekdays while G trains were to terminate at 71st/Continental Avenue. During weekends the G train was to run between Jamaica Center and Smith–Ninth Streets, while N trains would terminate at 57th Street or 71st/Continental Avenue. During late nights there was supposed to be a G train shuttle between Jamaica Center and Van Wyck Boulevard. The signage indicating such service was installed inside the Union Turnpike station around 1985-ish.

A lot of buses, especially Nassau Cunty's, were shifted from Hillside Avenue to Archer Avenue. So Archer service had to be upgraded.

Some years ago, there was no C service in Manhattan on weekends for 6 months or a year. Your solution would be to simply kill it.

I agree. I am glad that I have and never lost the ability to navigate with at least decent signage, even a city I've never been in before. My first time in London I got off the plane at the Heathrow, went for the Underground, and never got in a car or asked for directions for the 10 days I was in town. And I had almost no advance knowledge of the city. I even used the buses.

I had a similar experience in Paris.

Rome was ok but a little spotty with their signage. Like when I got out of the airport (the far, US-based terminal) there was no immediate signage to point me to where the express train to Termini was.

But with good signage, I don't need any help, even if the language is a little different, and it's a shame that people don't know how to use the tools at their disposal to get around. The cabs, I'm sure, want to keep it that way though.

I don't know the story. But you not could serve Archer with a Queens Blvd thru-Local or a G shuttle.

The n4 is the only Nassau County bus that goes to Parsons Archer. All other Jamaica service goes to the 165th Street Terminal. The n4 runs along Merrick Blvd. I don't know if it ever went to Hillside or if, after the El was torn down, passengers had to walk from the 165th Street Terminal to Hillside and 168th St. to catch a train.

I agree with that. But I would think that the subway would be built however it's going to be built and then the buses would adjust accordingly, since buses have more flexibility. I suppose a huge part of selecting Archer was the presence of the LIRR.

I have a 1975 Queens Bus Map. The only bus routes shown using Archer east of Sutphin are the Q6, 8, 9, and 41, looping back at 165th onto Jamaica Av to go back west. All the Merrick Blvd bus routes went north to Hillside / 168th rather than west to Sutphin / Archer. The Q43 was the only route that went "out of its way" to service the LIRR (though the Q44 took a semi-roundabout route to get to LIRR as well). The Q17A (today's Q30) and the Q31 did not go to the LIRR at all.

Sounds like the only benefit of selecting Archer over Hillside was LIRR access, unless someone wants to put forth the opinion that bus congestion was eased with the dawn of the Archer Ave subway.

Don't forget that the Parsons-Archer terminal has two subway options - the E and the J/Z - so bus riders from SE Queens and the N4 have a better choice and a shorter trip than if they used the old E service at 169th-Hillside. Believe that the cost savings with shifting the SE Queens buses to Parsons-Archer convinced the TA to send the E train to Parsons-Archer and would allow the F along to serve the 179th St. branch.

N4 formerly ended at 168th and Hillside, where there are stairs down to the subway, then the E train. Don't know if it stopped at 165th Street terminal on the outbound trip - but don't think it did because most of its riders wanted the E train at 169th Street.

I vaguely remembered N4's (and N5's) laying up and belching away on a residential side street a block off Hillside near 169th Street station.

So there would have been shuttle G and a crosstown G running at the same time? How would have it even turned at Van Wyck? The whole thing sounds like unnecessary complication.

Yes, re-routing the buses to Jamaica Center was an integral part of the plan. Rush hour used to be brutal on 168th St as bus after bus had to empty at Hillside ave pre Archer.

It certainly was eased. As bad as it is today, it was worse before 12/88. The area around 169th St was simply not designed to handle all that bus traffic. I won't even include the myriad of "dollar vans" which poached riders from the various bus lines dumping people at 169th St.

169th st used to get dangerously crowded during the morning rush.

The N train was never EXP along Queens Blvd, only in Manhattan and Bklyn. From 1976 to the N/R terminal switch, N trains ran to Forest Hills via Bway Exp Mon-Fri from 6AM to about 745PM. Other times, N trains ran from COney Island and terminated at 57th St. Mon-Fri AM rush hrs, all N trains ran via Bway local SOUTHBOUND, and PM rush hrs, all trains ran via Bway Local NORTHBOUND. Alternate N trains operated from Forest Hills to Whitehall St via local Southbound M-f 7:20AM to 8:15AM, and Northbound 4:30PM to 5:15PM. I can recall killing time watching the N and RR trains come in from Queens at Lex-59th during the peak AM rush back then, and there seemed to be an N OR RR train arriving approx every 2 mins back then!!

N - Weekdays 6AM-9PM to Jamaica Center
G - Weekdays to Forest Hills only

G - Evenings and weekends to Jamaica Center (no N service)

G - Nights, shuttle from Van Wyck Blvd to Jamaica Center, Queens Plaza to Smith/9th

It was a bad idea that was wisely re-considered.

To add, the 1985 signs on the R46's had settings for the N to both terminate at Parsons/Archer AND 179th st.
