I don't think they'll go so far as to say "never do this again". The possibility of really big snowstorms still exists. Push the governor too far on this and it can backfire.

In other words, normal AVAILABLE media, most notably local newscasts that did not air on Christmas Day 2010.

As said, a lot of that was changed after that blizzard to avoid a repeat of 2010.

Before you tell us how there were no local newscasts again, can you please find some sort of evidence that was in fact the case in New York City? I don't make a habit of watching the TV news (Jeopardy, the only TV show that I watch with any regularity, comes on at 7:30 in the DC area) but I've never heard of the stations in DC (a smaller media market than Philadelphia) not airing newscasts on major holidays.

Dow was WAY down that I last saw and that was being attributed in part of people not being at their desks due to the earlier shutdown.

wRONG. There was tons of media available. Anyone who at all cared about what was going on in the world, including what the weather would be like, had NO TROUBLE AT ALL finding a news source. Let me repeat that - NO TROUBLE AT ALL. Do you even live in NYC? Are you not aware of all the 24/7 media outlets we have? There are so many! And that's not even counting the internet, which almost every person has.

Cost to city in economic activity: $200 million (All Transit Closing at 11 Tonight)

NYC economy lost $200M from fizzled storm, transit shutdown

By Colleen Long and Meghan Barr
Jan 27, 2015 6:03 PM EST
New York City lost about $200 million in economic activity in the fizzled snow storm and decision to shut down the transit system, but it wasn't a crippling loss, according to a preliminary estimate from Moody's Analytics.

Consumers who would have otherwise bought cars or made other major purchases will likely do so a day or two later, Moody's economist Adam Kamins said. And he noted that many employees forced to stay home Tuesday were able to telecommute.

"For example, a holiday where people aren't working would have a greater impact on the economic output than this storm," Kamins said.

Evan Gold, senior vice president for Planalytics, a firm that advises companies on weather issues, estimated the economic losses for the total Northeast, including New York, Philadelphia and Boston, at $500 million.

"Now that does sound like a lot of money, but when you think about last year, where we had a polar vortex, several weeks of that, more population centers impacted as well as above-normal snowfall, last year's overall economic impact is pegged at anywhere from $15 billion to $50 billion," he said. "So in comparison, this is actually a relatively small event."

In New York, the biggest impact was on small businesses and hourly workers who rely on tips, such as taxi drivers and restaurant workers.

For them, the lost work time stung. Lenice Ferguson, a baker at Insomnia Cookies said the shop is usually open until about 3 a.m. making deliveries. The bakery closed at about 10 p.m. Monday.

"It's a big deal, because I only work three nights out of the week," the 26-year-old said. "My check is going to be short, and I have bills that I have to pay."

Subways, rail lines, bridges and tunnels were all closed Monday night. Residents were told to stay off the streets after 11 p.m. or face fines. Transportation reopened Tuesday morning after it was clear the storm was a bust in New York City, with most areas getting about 8 inches instead of the predicted 2 feet.

Fausto Cabrera opened his Upper West Side barber shot Tuesday morning but wasn't expecting many customers.

"There was nobody here yesterday and today, just look," he said, pointing to six empty barber chairs. "All I can do is wait."

Mayor Bill de Blasio said economic loss was much less than it would have been had the storm hit in full force, and that taking precautions helped the city get back online faster.

Moody's economist Kamins said that for the Northeast overall, the storm would have done about $16 billion in damage had it hit full force. Instead, the impact will likely reach just $1.25 billion.

"I will always err on the side of safety and caution," de Blasio said Tuesday. "We had consistently been getting reports talking about two feet or more of snow. To me it was a no-brainer, we had to take precautions to keep people safe."

Shaon Chowdhury, a manager of Arthur Cab Leasing Corp., in Queens, said he didn't have a problem with the city's actions even though he lost about $60,000 in revenue and expenses.

"If they did get 28 inches it would be a problem, so shutting down is a good idea," he said. "What happens if we did get 28 inches? It would have been hell."

New York City's 24,000 restaurants probably lost millions in revenue in total, said Chris Hickey, regional director of New York City for the New York State Restaurant Association.

For the first time in the decade since it first opened a block north of Times Square, the TSQ brasserie deserted at mid-afternoon Monday. Business was down about 70 percent.

"Never in my life was it like this — empty," said manager Mohi Hassan.

Whether or not it was the MTA or Cuomo who ordered it, the reason for the action is the same: to keep the tracks and roads as clear as possible and to avoid an incident. You can't say the MTA has nothing to do with it, since they are some of the ones carrying this out.

I know in Philly, NONE of the local stations had ANY newscasts that Christmas Day until 11:00 PM and from what I had been told that was the case in NYC.

As mentioned, WCAU-TV (NBC 10) in Philadelphia was doing special webcasts that day only because Glenn "Hurricane" Schwartz came in apparently on his own and did that. Otherwise, people in Philly might not have prepared as well as they did.

I'm not convinced. But let's assume for a moment that what you are saying is in fact true. Do you now expect us to believe that a TV station in the nation's largest media market couldn't cobble together a newscast when the weather made a turn for the worst? Or that the MTA decision makers couldn't keep tabs on the weather themselves because it was a holiday?

The were a whole multitude of problems that were discussed to death at that time (here and on many other forums). Many of those problems (not just the media issue and other things I brought up) have since been adjusted to avoid a repeat of what happened in 2010 from happening.

The point is, Cuomo in my view likely overstepped on fears something would go wrong and it would torpedo a Presidentiial bid in 2020 or '24. no matter how slim in reality that is. In the process, he violated rule #1 of politics in that you NEVER PISS OFF WALL STREET and now that is likely to come back to bite him in ways he never imagined. especially if it puts other potential Democratic candiates for various offices in jeopardy for 2016 because Wall Street will look for Republicans beyond what they normally do to take it out on Cuomo and send a message to him. If I'm at the DNC, I make it clear to Cuomo he is NEVER to do it again outside of an Irene/Sandy situation because of the potential fallout that goes way beyond him.

The reason was probably that he didn't want to look bad if something happened, even if it was something reasonable and expected under the circumstances.

The MTA didn't have a choice. If they disobeyed, people could/would lose their jobs. They complied under protest. So when disusing the decision to shut it all down, you have to recognize that the MTA had nothing to do with it.

Before the 2010 blizzard, however many stations often ran figure skating specials and other stuff on Christmas morning (or in WPIX's case, "The Yule Log") so staff did not have to come into work because Christmas day usually was a slow news day. Between that and live sports, stations often did not run newscasts except for 11:00 PM to meet FCC requirements. That all changed after the 2010 blizzard.

Point was, there were a lot of things taken forgranted that led to what happened during that storm that no longer are.

Yes. I know people who have to deal with family that are like that.

On another board I post at, there was for example someone who noted when Whitney Houston died how they didn't find out until well into the next day because she was with her parents who did not have TV or internet and frowned on her even using her cell phone because they were older and quite rigid. At Christmastime, I'm sure many were dealing with parents/relatives like that and that likely contributed to what happened in 2010.

Don't be so sure. Given how many people are PO'ed at Cuomo over this, he may have overextended.

That would be mostly temporary, because once everything is running again, it's back to world news, earnings reports, etc. People may even profit from the turbulence - that's how speed traders work.

Certainly.

That said, Wall Street is still VERY PO'ed and I suspect Cuomo may have inadvertantly made the Dems effort to regain the House and Senate control in 2016 a lot harder.

As said, Rule #1 of politics:

DO NOT PISS OFF WALL STREET!

They can say all they want, but David Faber's DOUBLE BLASTING of Cuomo on CNBC summed up what a lot of Wall Street was thinking.

There are many on Wall Street who are EXTREMELY PISSED OFF over this and WILL NOT FORGET it so easily. They will use this against Cuomo and put massive pressure on him never to do it again and if I were with the DNC, I make it where if Cuomo does it again, he is "persona non grata" with the party.

Ripple Effects of Shutdown

I am concerned about the ripple effects of this that may go WAY beyond New York and into national politics:

Wall Street is very much aligned with the Republican Party, which has has lot of members that are VERY backwards on a lot of things (especially what is known as the Tea Party). What Cuomo did in violating Rule #1 of politics is have Wall Street remember who did this and motivates them to "Double Down" to make sure the GOP stays in power of BOTH legislative branches in 2016.

We won't see this for almost two years, but Wall Street has a VERY long memory and some Democrats that were hoping to help get control of the legislative branches back from the GOP now face a battle made more difficult by influential people who clearly are PO'ed at Cuomo for shutting down the subways and will use it against him where they can, in this case, "doubling down" on GOP candidates in states where they are vulnerable or the Democratic incumbent is.

That's what I mean by Cuomo unleashing blowback and not PO'ing Wall Street is rule #1.

I think you are looking at the wrong state. The GOP is not in power in both legislative houses in NY, so they can't possibly stay in power in 2016.

Also, Wall Street could allocate $5 billion and still would not be able to unseat the Democrats from the Assembly in 2016. The Senate they can probably hold if they want to spend the money.

"If you are paranoid and sad, take a pill! CLAP-CLAP!!!" You are attempting to snowball a one day service stop into something it is not. Bear in mind that most of these Republicans are from upstate and couldn't give a shit, one way or another, about this shutdown!!! It happened, it's history, let's get on with a Legislature minus Sheldon Silverman. That's the ONLY thing on their minds now!

Honestly, I wish that you would stop with these ludicrous posts. If you want to be a conspiracy buff, this is not the place for it. Enough.
