Yes, but I have dealt over the years with people from outside the US in particular who would never tolerate that and you could never tell them otherwise. It does make sense on a day like this to be at home if possible, but I'm sure there will be those who will still demand people be at work or demand they come in over the weekend to make up the days missed, which if so I think will really PO some against the Governor. |

Strikes are expected and the weather still allows people to get around usually, even if by walking that people should often do anyway if possible. And anyway, since writing that, as has been noted elsewhere lawsuits may not even be necessary. I can see where key donors behind closed doors make it clear to Cuomo that shutting down the underground portions of the subway like that was unnecessary and unacceptable and if he did it again OTHER than a Sandy-like situation where flooding is a genuine issue, he would face having donations withheld from a potential Presidential campaign in 2020 or '24. I'm sure a lot of Wall Street CEOs are very PO'ed at Cuomo right now. |

Posted by Wallyhorse on Tue Jan 27 04:19:45 2015, in response to Re: All Transit Closing at 11 Tonight, posted by The Silence on Mon Jan 26 20:53:36 2015. A Super Typhoon is a lot different:That's the equal of I believe a Category 5 Hurricane here and that is what Japan faced a couple of months ago (I was watching the Grand Prix of Japan F1 Race when this was about to hit there and a big deal was made about people being there for it in spite of impending Super Typhoon). That storm as I understand it was actually WORSE than Sandy was here and they didn't even stop for that storm all that much. Point is, this should NOT have been enough to shut the underground portions down, though the 2010 fiasco likely played a big part in why it was. I'm sure with the reduced totals there are going to be a lot of people PO'ed at Cuomo for shutting the system down and key donors may make it clear to him NEVER to do it again save for a Sandy-like situation. |

I can see someone trying to use it against him. He really is a political coward. He did the same thing with fracking. There are issues with doing it safely; PA is dealing with those. You definitely have a point on social media, however, what happened in 2010 all happened on the OUTDOOR portions of the line that should have been shut down WELL BEFORE those things happened. The underground portion is a different story.Actually, as noted elsewhere since, it turns out lawsuits may not be even necessary. Key donors who would be looking to help Cuomo if he runs for President could simply threaten to withhold funds from a Presidential campaign in 2020 or '24 unless Cuomo agrees to ONLY do a shutdown like this on the underground portions in the future if it's a Sandy-like situation where flooding of the tunnels is a potential major problem. Given this storm fizzled out quite a bit, I'm sure a lot of people right now are PO'ed at Cuomo for this and I'm sure Wall Street in particular is PO'ed. |

Exactly:I now suspect this closure had more to do with concerns the MTA would foul up, a lawsuit would come out of that and produce a sound byte that in 2020 or '24 a rival to Cuomo in a Presidential run uses that against Cuomo. In the dog-eat-dog/cutthroat world that politics is, I suspect Cuomo is well aware of how something like a lawsuit against the MTA caused by keeping the system open now could come back to haunt him in 2020/'24 if he runs for President and that played into it. |

"And they're not because Cuomo is a political coward."Or, as someone else opined, a political calculator. The shutdown was ordered because Princess Andrew believed there was a benefit to him. He's got plenty of spin practice and will attempt to spin this to his advantage. I was not aware that a snow shutdown was never done until recently, but am aware that the system is 100+ years old. With that info, I change my opinion to "this was done for BS, not out of wisdom". For the MTA alone, how much are the extra costs incurred by the shutdown? I'm guessing this costs the NYC economy a nine to ten figure amount, and far more tri-state, offset by the benefit to those who can afford it of having sorta vacation day. |

Wallyhorse has made this comment about "normal media" and the 2010 storm several times. I really don't know what he means. I was watching one of the network morning shows on Christmas day. The local (Albany) weather guy was explaining that the models were wrong and the storm would be much bigger than forecast.I decided I would drive back to NYC on the morning of 12/26 instead of staying another night at my sister's. I was home by noon on 12/26 just as the snow was starting to stick. There was more than 24 hours notice before the storm hit. |

This was in my view clearly Cuomo protecting a potential Presidential bid in 2020 or '24, fearful that if the MTA screwed up and got sued it would be used against him in an ad campaign if he runs for President. |

Well there are no "express tracks" or "underground" portions of the SIRT, and plenty of the roads on Staten Island need to be looked at so the buses can run. The buses on Staten Island being the major portion of the transit network here.I suppose that there's efforts to clear the tracks where needed, and service will resume to its usual glacial levels. The buses might take a while. Mike |

It's possible they might apply pressure to Cuomo, if they feel they took unnecessary losses. Otherwise, you have to cite something in American law in order to justify a lawsuit which is at least similar to this situation.I sort of agree as to the reason why the MTA is doing it, they don't want another situation where a train with passengers gets stuck for DAYS.
