The provisions from the Queens IND line into the station we now know as Jamaica-Van Wyck was already in place with the original construction of the main line during the 1930's. As early as 1931 (and confirmed by a savings bank issued map in that year), plans were drawn up to have a stub-end terminal to be called "Jamaica-Hillside Avenues", but never were done.

So, when the Archer Line began construction on August 15, 1972, its plans were able to incorporate the unused provisions east of the Briarwood-Van Wyck Boulevard station to a crossover point under Hillside Avenue. The standard IND incandescent lighting fixtures were installed in anticipation back then, but never used until they were finally energized and then lighted up when the route finally became active.

That's not how it's done. If the sponsoring agency (MTA) doesn't request funding, it won't be funded.

Also, anyone can make requests on those websites. They don't check your citizenship!

im sorry...but the people running the MTA at the time were deeply self involved..a continuous black eye..
even the President of the USA at the time,Ronald Reagan, was EXTREMELY upset with them..cutting off ALL FUNDING until a full investigation is undertaken concerning the 63rd st..Second avenue..and Archer avenue subways.

another reason the South Jamaica line never materialized was the dispute with the LIRR.The railroad didn't want to give up its trackage for long term construction..didn't want to give up its row at all.
the money for the new routes plan dried up from various misuses..corruption..and plain ineptitude.

When the (Briarwood) Van Wyck Blvd station on the E and F opened in
1937, there used to be bellmouths located south of this station. This
was for a proposed line down Van Wyck Blvd, as part of the IND second
system. These have been since connected to the Archer Avenue Subway.
The entire grade separated tunnels for tracks D1A and D2A were built
as part of the Queens Blvd lines contract under Public Works
Administration (PWA) project No. 2741 in 1935 and 1936. The original
tunnel lighting was installed and operative. They were called tracks
D5 and D6 in 1935-36 and were destined to terminate at Rockaway Blvd.
The tunnel was built originally from the (Briarwood) Van Wyck Blvd
station to the middle of the present interlocking just north of the
Jamaica-Van Wyck station. When the Archer Avenue Extension was added the original tunnel was left original except for the addition of ties
and track. I figured the provision for the Van Wyck Blvd./
Archer Ave. line south of the Van Wyck Blvd (Briarwood) station was
built at the same time as the rest of the Queens Blvd line. It
made things a whole lot easier when construction on the
Archer Ave. line began in 1972.

There were lots of redbirds on the J/Z when it first opened, but they were quickly moved to the M and L as the MTA wanted nothing but newly overhauled R42's on the line. They heavily promoted the J/Z train as an alternative for southern Queens riders headed for lower Manhattan by touting the time savings (over using the E). It was initially very successful.

When the J/Z first started, all trains on that line had to be GOH so a GOHed R-30 would go to the line before a non GOH R-42.

The J line was the showcase line when Archer opened. The priority was to get the newly delivered GOH R42's over there, both M/K and CI rebuilds. Redbirds held down the balance, prioritized on the Z.

As time went on, M/K R42's became the norm, till the 100 R40M's came in. At that time the line super wanted them so they became the dominant equipment on the line with the M/K R42 supplying the balance.

I often use the Sutphin-Archer station. Three things catch my attention:
1) The afternoon crowd that gets off an outbound E and goes downstairs to catch an inbound J. I suspect they are heading to stations in the first two miles of the inbound J, a trip that might ordinarily require a wait for a bus.
---
2) The airport travelers on the E.
---
3) The standard wait of E trains trying to enter the Parsons terminal and holding at Archer for a clear track.

Most of the R30's stayed east until all the R40M's were back from GOH. There were some R27's that got painted red in 1989 and were used on the C for a short time, but the R10's still ruled the C line well into 1989.

Yes, passengers along the Jamaica Avenue corridor through Woodhaven and Richmond Hill seem to prefer to go out of the way to Jamaica to transfer to the Manhattan-bound E rather than ride the J/Z through Brooklyn into Manhattan. The fact that the E goes to Midtown probably has a lot to do with that.

Of course, now it's possible for weekday Jamaica/Broadway-Brooklyn riders to reach Midtown via a same-platform transfer to the M at Essex Street.
