There were lots of redbirds on the J/Z when it first opened, but they were quickly moved to the M and L as the MTA wanted nothing but newly overhauled R42's on the line. They heavily promoted the J/Z train as an alternative for southern Queens riders headed for lower Manhattan by touting the time savings (over using the E). It was initially very successful.
