It's amazing that many of them were saved and are now running for tourist railroads across the country. Credits go to Youtube user nyshortline for uploading this video. |

When I used to do day trips on weekdays, I always took what was then the first 'non peak' train in the morning to get the ODRT fare, and we woulD almost always meet a train of those coming in from Newark right at the tunnel. I always thought they looked so antiquated then - especially in the summer when they had both end doors open, and you could see the engineer plain as day! |

IIRC, this was a Friday. The power was shut down and they used diesels to cover the weekend service while the switchover from the old DC voltage to the modern AC was made. |

I know it's barely related, but do you know when they last ran the Erie Stillwell coaches? I know they were last used on the Port Jervis line, but I don't know if the acquisition of the Arrow IA's effectively ended their use here. |

I know it's barely related, but do you know when they last ran the Erie Stillwell coaches? The date was Saturday, September 14, 1974. Train service between Port Jervis and Hoboken was still run by the Erie - Lackawanna Railroad. On Saturdays there were only two scheduled trains No 70 which came down in thew morning and No 71 which returned to Port Jervis at night. On this Saturday No 70 came down with three E-8's and 15 Stillwells. No 71 ran north with on E-8 and two Stillwells. There was no Sunday service then but on Monday morning, September 15 the Comet I's handled all runs. Larry, RedbirdR33 |

I rode that last train with friends. It was amazing cars like that lasted into the 80's. We were in the second car, behind the operating car that was a 1912 parlor car, the one with the diamond shaped windows in the bathrooms.I even tape recorded the entire trip from Hoboken to Dover. Maggee Hickey from Ch.7 Eyewitness news came through our car with crew, having been dropped off at Hoboken before we left. The atmosphere that evening was much like the very last ride I took on the Myrtle Ave. el. This was it, no more riding these ancient, but classy cars on the Morris & Essex line. At Dover, our trip back to Hoboken was by 1973 Pullman-Standard push-pulls. not the same feeling. We all had steak dinner at the Clam Broth House in Hoboken and eventually returned home. Can't believe twenty nine years has passed and next year makes it thirty. Bill Newkirk |

Which was only what - two each way daily then? IIRC, coming out of HOB, it was 445, and 526. Or were there three?Lou: That's about right. The August 25, 1974 Timetable for the Main Line - Bergen County Line (Form 7) provides the following information. Passenger service between Port Jervis and Hoboken operated Monday through Saturday. There was no Sunday service. Monday through Friday there were two eastbounds and two westbound trains. No 52 left from Port Jervis at 607AM followed by No 54 at 649AM. Westbound No 57 left Hoboken at 430PM and No 59 at 542PM. No 59 was something of an "express" making its first stop at Ho-Ho-Kus and the next one at Ramsey and then making all stops to Port Jervis over the original route. There was a third eastbound in the morning rush. This was No 50 which originated at Monroe at 630AM. The Saturday schedule provided for one train in each direction. No 70 left Port Jervis at 740AM and no 71 departed from Hoboken at 400PM. It may seem hard to believe but from the time of the brutal service cuts in late 1966 to July 1989 there was no Sunday service on either the Main Line or the Bergen County Line. BTW: Have you heard about a train show in Middletown? I don't know of one but I have heard of some reference to it. Larry, RedbirdR33 |

Bill: While I welcome the increase in train service I dread the day that they ever bring the trains across the Hudson. The developers will come in and cut down every tree and pave over any patch of grass. There are still some wonderfully rural sections in Orange County. In fact Campbell Hall comes to mind. I always use to tell people that it was located in the middle of a cow pasture and I wasn't far wrong. Larry, RedbirdR33 |

Larry - the O&W people had a show in June concurring with the town celebrating its 125th as a city. It was really just an exhibit, no dealers.I did not ride the train hardly at all until the late 70s - and I distinctly remember one train being at 445 then...then there was the 542 - which CR had the guts to call "The Orange County Express", and then another at 6 -something. Or perhaps that was later after the MTA took over. I have no timetables, only my conductor cash receipts. Hell, I can't even remember what year it was they built the new, bigger lot out there! |

Lou: Service began to improve under Conrail, mainly through funding provided by the MTA and NJDOT. The July 2, 1979 timetable added a third westbound train, No 61 leaving from Hoboken at 620PM and running as far as Monroe. This service pattern of two trains each way between Hoboken and Port Jervis and one train each way between Hoboken and Monroe continued until October 1982.The October 31, 1982 timetable shows a dramatic increase in service (at least on paper). The Monroe turn was extended to Middletown. There were also four shuttle runs each way between Middletown and Suffern using RDC's sent over from the mainland. Unfortunately the RDC's were aging out and buses were frequently substituted. Larry, RedbirdR33 |

The Catskill Mountain Railroad in Mount Tremper NY operates two as standard coaches with the electrical equipment removed. The railroad runs between Phoenicia and Cold Brook and is well worth a visit. Check out there website. Larry, RedbirdR33 |
