Lou: Service began to improve under Conrail, mainly through funding provided by the MTA and NJDOT. The July 2, 1979 timetable added a third westbound train, No 61 leaving from Hoboken at 620PM and running as far as Monroe. This service pattern of two trains each way between Hoboken and Port Jervis and one train each way between Hoboken and Monroe continued until October 1982.

The October 31, 1982 timetable shows a dramatic increase in service (at least on paper). The Monroe turn was extended to Middletown. There were also four shuttle runs each way between Middletown and Suffern using RDC's sent over from the mainland. Unfortunately the RDC's were aging out and buses were frequently substituted.
