Wait, so there were two sets of platforms? I know the station was lengthened almost until it was touching the IRT City Hall terminal, but I did not know it was configured like this. If the date is accurate, we are seeing the terminal at the height of it's use, when it was the only rapid transit connection between NY and Broooklyn outside the Williamsburg Bridge terminal at Essex St.

It does look very odd. Does anyone know how this station operated, and why there were the two sets of platforms, or rather the single island platform at the very end, and the "express station" layout of two island platforms before that? It looks like trains which arrived on the inbound "local" track would have to leave on the outbound "express" track, and vice versa.

Maybe it was arrivals and departures. I always found the maze of tracks approaching Sands Street to be very confusing as to which service did what. Too bad it has all been destroyed.

That's a possibility. Given the crush loading these trains would have suffered, it's probable that you could not load and unload trains at the same platform. That would also explain why the front platform is PACKED and the foreground one is relatively empty. Remember that 1907 was the year before the IRT tunnel to Brooklyn opened. Not only do you have the entire BRT el and surface lines feeding the station, you also had LIRR passengers using it to get from the Flatbush Ave terminal.

Locomotives didn't haul trains over the bridge. The bridge railway was cable, then electric (with some overlap).

There were steam switchers in cable days, but always at the west end of trains. Incoming trains coasted from the end of cable into the terminal; the locomotives pushed them (without coupling to the train) from the terminal out to the start of the cable; then reversed back into the terminal.

This is an interesting picture. Is this engine "pushing" the train across the bridge? Or does it look like that's a steam engine rescuing a stranded cable car? Sorta looks like there's some work being done at track level and there's some lookie-loos checking out the hubub.

Yes, they did. Despite Washington Roebling's claims, it was deemed safer if the steam engines just pushed the cable cars to/from the cable accesses. The locos ran over the bridge by themselvs to get to/from the Bridge Yard.

It didn't look like this by 1944. It saw most of it's service lost after municipal takeover. IIRC there was also a fire which damaged it, hastening it's demise. Even during the height of WWII, few people still used it. They also wanted to clear the mess on the other side of the bridge to finish Cadman Plaza.

Park Row was built- and torn down- in sections. On March 31st, 1935, the rear extension and the 2 tracks on the north platform were closed and removed later that year. The demolition was part of the City's plan to improve the Park Row area around City Hall. Also, ridership on the older Brooklyn els had declined, as people chose to take the subways to Manhattan. So, Park Row service continued with just the Lexington and Fulton els running to the 2 south platform tracks of the terminal. As previously mentioned here, Fulton and 5th Ave el service ended on 6/01/40, leaving just the Myrtle and Lexington lines to cross the bridge. During the war, in 1943, the City wanted to stop service and cut Myrtle/lex service back. But, wartime federal bureaucracy delayed the closing until March 5th, 1944. The remaining Park Row structure was demolished in the summer of 1944, along with Sands Street and Adams Street in brooklyn.

I meant that Essex was opened in 1908. So for 1907 there was no need to modify your statement.

Judging from that vaulted ceiling, cutting away more than half of it must have been ugly (in more ways than one).

Dunno, I think it looks pretty good to me, considering how most later outdoor subway stations and terminals (even the previous Coney Island terminal) seemed to be quite a bit less elaborate.

It was an amazing structure, something I'm sure you remember being impressed with, not like (for example) the current Penn Station.

I still remember my first ever visit to Penn, and how awesome it was.

Same with some of the great London train sheds, or old Readng terminal, or even CNJ terminal in Jersey City. You felt like you were at the portal of something interesting.
