The point is there are more failures of individual car air conditioners in the R32's than in the R46's.

We're not talking about how cool the car is, but if you ask NYCT they'll tell you there is not difference in that aspect.

What about those signs with a picture of a conductor encouraging passengers to ride in the center of the train at night.

Wasn't it policy for conductors on half cab equipment to stand outside the cab between stations?

The pre-GOH R-46s had so much air that at speed I saw a JFK Express run a signal and heard 2 distinct pops from the trip cocks before the last car put the train into the hole.

The experiences that you had may have simply been the result of the characteristics of the pilot valve (on the R-44 it was not called a pilot valve as that name was given to another valve). I don't believe that any such difference was ever noted, however, as each contract of car was brake tested annually and involved dumping the train at speed.

The R32s did have air conditioner problems their last summer on the E. I thought Transit had just cut back on maintenance because the R 160s were coming in and the R32s were headed for retirement. But for some reason when they decided the R32s were going to be around a while longer they couldn't seem to get the air conditioners back into good condition.

Back in the day, there were more Entrance/exits and ventilation grates through the system.
The elimination of fare zones at stations that had more then one fare zone also saw the elimination of entrances. Some ventilation grate were sealed.
This lead to less air flow and the retention of heat underground.
The shrinking of the size of the mezzanines on the IND reduced the volume where hot air could rise to.

The E had it's fare (sorry......fair) share of air conditioning issues with the R-32s. I once had on a couple of occasions had trains of R-32s where 5 or more cars of a 10 car train be really broiling, and Parsons Archer definitely took them out of service. The real problem is when they get laid up, no one wants to shut the HVAC down, and they then run for hours and hours while they are laid up. How long do you think they are gonna run, almost continuously until they crap out??

Plus keep in mind no one likes to shut off the HVAC when the trains are laid up, so even when they are not in service, they run almost continuously. Whenever I was on a train that was to be laid up (i.e. when I did "Mary" layups at CIY), I always went in the cab and hit the switch to cut off the HVAC. It's not hard to do. Still, no one does it.

On a Jamaica-bound J at 75 St. now. I'll let you know if I see any R-42s at 111.

My feelings exactly. Once I'm done riding on the IND old timers on July 29th, I'm going to try to fit an R-32 Abbott ride in before heading back to my motel in Jersey.

You are certainly making an assumption that was not true. The R-32s were failing miserably on the E for at least 2 years before they were moved. To keep in in context, though, when the cars were at Jamaica, the approach to maintenance may have been different. The AC Compressor motors were certainly newer as was the entire HVAC system. Thus the systems ran more efficiently and thus cooler at first. Also consider that the E runs express while the C runs local - hence the doors opened less often on the E - allowing the HVAC system to work less hard.
