The pre-GOH R-46s had so much air that at speed I saw a JFK Express run a signal and heard 2 distinct pops from the trip cocks before the last car put the train into the hole.The experiences that you had may have simply been the result of the characteristics of the pilot valve (on the R-44 it was not called a pilot valve as that name was given to another valve). I don't believe that any such difference was ever noted, however, as each contract of car was brake tested annually and involved dumping the train at speed. |
