Long Island City...

...after almost 30 years of riding the LIRR, I finally took the ride this morning from Jamaica to LIC thru Richmond Hill, Maspeth, etc. It was awesome, I highly recommend it.

I was surprised to see a trainset of M7s laid up in LIC.

It's gotta be a bit of fun now that there are no stops on the Lower Montauk anymore. I remember when the stops were still on that line; people were indeed getting on and off.

Believe it or not, they're still intact, or as intact as they were for ages while active. There weren't any platforms to speak of, save Richmond Hill of course; some of them had a low platform of sorts with enough room for one entrance door, which makes them unusable by the C3 cars.

You probably never would have noticed the stations even when they were operational. They were just stops on the train in the middle of nowhere!! The last time I rode it was in the early 70's when I went to Pace U. and took the LIRR to school. In those days every schedule for every station had a small LIC timetable in the corner.

Yup. Most were just a sign at a grade crossing. In some periods, the signs weren't even there!

Here they all are in their decrepid glory. These were ALL OPERATING stations at the time of these photos which were the early 90's.

Richmond Hill:

Glendale:

Fresh Pond. The Jamaica bound train is leaving the station. The Jamaica side "platform" is the ballast between the two tracks on the right of the train. The "wall" platform on the left is the IN USE LIC bound side.

Haberman (notice WTC)

Penny Bridge:

Now there is only 1 train and it's the AM westbound . I took it back in the early 80's when there was 1 AM & PM and it was a Oyster Bay train extended from Jamaica. I remember the stops at Fresh Pond, Haberman , Penny Bridge. It was always a road switcher with a PA2 power pack on the end. Never saw a GP38 on it.

None of the stations looked like stations when open. I think the only station with any infrastructure left outside Richmond Hill is Fresh Pond, and that consists of the remains of a rusty metal staircase. Glendale was at a grade crossing. Haberman and Penny Bridge were basically nowhere.

There were four trains until the end. In the morning, there were two trains. One from Oyster Bay, and left Jamaica at 8:11 bound for LIC. At 8:15 was the second one, which made the local stops, and that came from Patchogue. The morning Oyster Bay Train was usually an F unit and an MP15 on the other end. The Patchogue train was usually either an M15 or F unit on one side, and a GP38 on the other.
In the afternoon there were two trains also, one semi-express, and the other a full local. The first one was the semi-express and started in LIC a little before 5, and stopped at only Penny Bridge, Haberman, and Fresh Pond, skipped both Glendale and Richmond Hill. About a half hour, the second train went through, full local making all stops, and also went to Oyster Bay.

Correct. I posted photos in the other post. Richmond Hill was a normal station. Fresh Pond was a run down second. It had curbs for the original ballast platforms, in total disrepair, and the stairway. That's it. It consisted of the wall platform, and the "island" platform which one side had the Jamaica track, and the other track the Bushwick Branch turn off.

I have one fond memory of riding that branch in the late '70s when the old push-pull equipment was running.

Heading toward Jamaica in the PM, we pulled into a station, maybe it was Glendale, when some guy runs out of the bar across the street to board the train I was on.

He may have been the only one to board at that stop, I didn't see anyone on the platform.

LIRR wanted complete latitude on what to run to LIC via Main Line vs. Lower Montauk. We saw that when an LIC-Oyster Bay job had to backfill for a Port Jeff job that was made into a shuttle.

(Of course, they picked the wrong Port Jeff train to make a shuttle. There are 4 car Hunterspoint-PJ trains at 340 and 630 which survive, but they went after the 5:11 - in the heart of rush hour, and downgraded an Huntington express to do so)

The FRA banned the practice of running MP15's cab-forward in the 1980's, so the 2900's become a rarity on that branch.

After Ronkonkoma was electrified, 40 - 50 push-pull coaches were retired, the Oyster Bay line saw the return of the 2900's on a LIC train, and got 2 MP15's back-to-back.

The Atlantic branch is grade separated, the Lower Montauk isn't and there's freight.

It's still possible to grade separate new tracks for passenger service while keeping existing at-grade tracks for freight and connect the former to the East River tunnels or ESA. Just make sure not to serve any of the communities in between who opposed all projects of the sixties and seventies.:p
