I think hands down still the best looking current EMU design running the rails ever!! The Metropolitan and Cosmopolitan M-Series (M-1/1A thru M-6)

I will even give you a little of each!!

Although no longer on non-stopper "Nozomi" service and demoted to semi-fast and stopper runs, I still think the 500 series is the Shinkansen with the best design. Just like the very first 0 series excited people of my generation when we were kids, kids growing up in the later half of the nineties must have gone "Wow!" for these, railfans and non-railfans alike.








It can even turn an American (or Canadian, maybe) girl into an instant foamer! (f-word warning)

That's pretty much one of the few reasons to visit Japan. Most Japanese rolling stock tends to look rather bland compared to Europe...

Most Japanese rolling stock tends to look rather bland compared to Europe...
For HSR I agree, but their commuter stuff is definitely not bland, far more exciting exterior design than some of the most recent US offerings (Comet V, M7).

In contrast, I think the Shinkansens are the best looking of their rolling stock, while some of the commuter rail and Tokyo Metro stuff looks like the bland boxes many of the NYCTA foamers acuse the MTA of purchasing.

OKay..I must admit I made a big-big mistake....I got tripped up on the definition of "EMU."

I had hoped only for submissions of equipment that operate either as single units or in married pairs like the Metra Electrics and the NICTD cars.... and have the capability to operate in trains of varying length, like shorter trains for off peak hours and longer trains for rush hours. The cars should also have end doors permitting movement from car to car.

Of course these restrictions limit what the designers can do with the ends of the cars which is part of constraints the Metra and the NICTD designers had to contend with. If you choose to, please resubmit if your entry didn't fit the "new guidelines."

In closing....my mistake.

Since when does any of that have to do with the definition of an electric multiple unit?

If you choose to, please resubmit if your entry didn't fit the "new guidelines."

Then you're not going to get much in terms of options as there aren't that many FRA-legal electric multiple units on the market. Other than Metra's slugs, it's basically the Metropolitans and their Cosmopolitan siblings or the Silverliner & Arrow family.

Well... If you think about it, they're all trying to achieve the same effect. Smooth and fast ride but not to the point you can't control it. It's logical they look alike (planes and spacecrafts too). :P

It's too bad the Talgo 22 wasn't selected by anyone, because the full-length bilevel articulated design was probably one of the most impressive designs to be created of late. It's too bad we couldn't get something like this for Metra's Rock Island or Milwaukee lines.



The Omneo is an equally interesting concept from Bombardier, and potentially illustrates a manner in which a bilevel EMU can operate with the sort of turnover seen in RER or S-bahn networks while not being devoid of seats for longer distance passengers. This illustration, from Mr. Tillier at the Caltrain-HSR compatibility blog, shows a door layout which includes multilevel doors to accommodate multiple platform heights.



The Swedish push to improve their high speed rails has resulted in the Gröna Tåget, which includes a number of really cutting edge improvements on the Bombardier Regina. Like the Regina the Gröna Tåget will allow full accessibility at various platform heights. Except that the Gröna Tåget will replace the Regina's internal wheelchair lift at the low door with a full moving floor to adjust to various platform heights.

But if I had to pick one EMU design I'd probably stick with the Neumeister designed counterpart to the Shinkansen Series 500 posted earlier. The Velaro E remains the fastest unmodified train, and it's by far and away one of the best trains I've had the pleasure of riding.

IMHO RENFE's ads for their AVE Class 103 units are also some of the best for a rail system around.


And besides, the Velaro looks *really* good in the proposed CHSRA Blue and Gold paint scheme:

Since most commuter rail around Tokyo are run like rapid transit elsewhere, you don't get that luxury unless you pay premium fares. Most lines around Tokyo have rush-only express trains with reserved seats and bar cart service. Even Tokyo Metro runs some for the through trains to Odakyu Railway.

Here's one at Tokyo Metro's Kasumigaseki station:




And Shinkansen's stoppers are really mid-to-long distance commuter trains during rush, not regional trains. Of course that has to do with long time Japanese customs where employers generally still pay full-time employees' commute expenses.

Which was a part of my original, if misguided intent....to show the difficulty of designing EMU cars that have to be coupled and uncoupled in normal operation with provisions for an operator/motorman at at least one end. But several here still ignore my correction or maybe they really can't find cars that match Metra Electric and NICTD cars.

To be honest, I still have not seen any EMU to date whose design looks better!! And as much as I am a fan of the M-8 and M-7/7A, nothing has surpassed the MTA Metropolitan and Cosmopolitan Series. And Budd, GE/Vickers, Tokyu and Morrison-Knudsen did a fine job in their design. As for reliability in operation, the MKs and Tokyu triplets suck massively (EPIC FAILS). Budd and GE/Vickers definitely won!!

I'm not sure for other countries, but British EMU are designed with coupling and decoupling in mind. Their 3-car/4-car sets are coupled and decoupled during operational hours (longer sets in rush hours if possible, shorter sets at other times) and that flexibility is built into some of their designs such as end vestibules for Southern region EMUs such as Class 375, which personally I don't find them particularly beautiful even though that supposed to be the apex of British EMU design!

That design looks like a railcar designer who had hoped to be an aeronautical designer conjured it up. Thumbs down!!!! I just cannot see that as a commuter EMU design

Well, Series 500 is NOT design to be a Commuter EMU anyway. And Japanese Shinkansen has always taken aeronautical designs for design trains since their first train Series 0, otherwise how did that bullet train front come about!

For high speed, fast railroading, those designs are definitely winners. I was always partial top the TGV designs dating all the way back to the early orange TGV trains.

They end up looking like platypus to provide constant rate of change in front to mitigate micro-pressure booms in tunnel bellmouth and regular cross section for sizeable production.

I don't know what JoeV wants. Vestibule doors are for function, not just for looks. The doors aren't needed for crew purposes when the control cab is on the upper level and you can only reach that cab from the stairwell in the middle of the car.

"METRA was quite anal is making their MU's be just like gallery cab cars. They took this to the ridiculous extreme of leaving out the end vestibule door. At least NICTD (and the future Metra order) corrected that."

There are almost no commuter style trains in Tokyo that you can ride without paying a premium fare in Tokyo. They all became rapid transit style trains in the course of the 80s and 90s.

But there are some that might pass your qualifications if you don't mind the extra fare and the fact that they are triplets or longer units.

The other end of the Odakyu 60000 series that I've shown in another post looks like this so two units can couple/decouple mid-trip.


Then there's Narita Express which serves the airport.

Here's the old order, retired last year.


They also couple/uncouple mid-trip.


Here's the new order, introduced last year. The black part in the front opens up for a diaphragm connection so people can pass through, just like the two previous rolling stock. In the case of the two Narita Express stock, the connection is motorized and semi-automated.



The only remaining rolling stock in Tokyo that are married pairs (actually driving motor and driving trailer) and does not charge extra fare is probably the Tobu 6050 series. They usually start in Tokyo as six-car set and most of them are decoupled mid-trip to reach three different destinations as two-car sets. But being of 1985 vintage, they look kinda dated.

The shorter stopper runs on Shinkansen lines are really commuter runs so in a way, they can be considered "commuter trains". Monthly passes are sold too.

IIRC, it was more about losing inside space that they stopped using the circular form.

Okay, I'll bite. I LIKE the looks of the M 8s. In the nostalgia category, the SL IIs, IIIs, and the NICTD power cars. I dislike the trailers because of the sealed off center doors. The Highliner IIs/NICTD 300s...okay, nothing special.

Ah, you reminded me how cramp the 500 series is inside the train. It's just like narrow body aircraft with 5-a-breast seating in ordinary class!

Mismatching number of seats and doors also preclude 500 series from using JR Central tracks after enough 700 series trainsets are bought. And thus being relegated to slower services in JR West rails (since 500 series is their train.)

Yes. All the Nozomis are now run with N700 series and the 500 are only assigned to JR West territory.
