I would imagine after. Once the war was over and construction resumed on the station shells S/O ENY which involved laying track, installing signals and tiling the stations the work probably progressed at a feverish rate. The first station to be opened after the war was actually Bway/ENY which already had the station finish completed and apparently the interlocking machine installed since that was the last conventional lever model 5 GRS installed on the system, Euclid and Pitkin receiving push button interlockings. Of course, depending on the way the contractors worked, it could be possible that the stations were tiled from Euclid(or 76 St) north but then how would that account for the descriptions that indicate that 76 St was only partially tiled. In all likelihood, tile work on the stations was completed before rails were laid as was the case with ENY and if that were to be the case that might account for a partial station finish at 76 St. Sub contractors for station finishing may have been working at a faster pace than those installing the track and signals and the station would have been partially tiled when the word came down to halt further construction. |

From the time line when Rocky Av opened (I believe 1936) until the subway was extended to ENY, there is an unusually long period of time since the war for the USA did not start until 1941. From some of the early proposals for IND expansion, it seems that when the IND was extended to Rocky Av the city did not yet have a definitive plan for exactly where they wanted the subway to go beyond that point. Otherwise the subway would have been built at least as far as ENY if not further. As I mentioned in another post, there were 3 possibilities that I am aware of for further expansion. One involved continuing straight out Fulton St under the present J Line structure. Another was down Liberty Av past ENY and the third was what was eventually built which is under Pitkin Av following almost exactly the route of the Fulton St El. All of those options included the takeover of the potion of the Fulton St El that the IND now operates. It seems to me that the decision to adopt the present route was not adopted until after unification in 1940 since a continuation down Fulton St would probably not have allowed for a transfer to the BMT Bway Jct complex. In order to provide for the transfer, the subway had to be angled slightly north under Truxton Park to place it close enough to the BMT to enable an easy transfer something that was not provided for with the BMT Fulton St El. Prior to unification, the city really didn't care about convenient inter company transfers but now that the entire system was under city operation, ease of connections between what were now divisions within a unified transit system was something to be sought. My theory is that the final routing was not established until unification in 1940 and construction east of Rocky Av was probably not started until then and before the rest of the line was completed, the war intervened. Had one of the aforementioned proposals been firmly agreed on, the IND would likely have been completed a lot farther east and a lot sooner than it eventually was probably a few years prior to unification. |

Highly doubtful since the portion of the Fulton St El between Hinsdale and Grant had not been rebuilt to dual contract standards and could not support anything heavier than a Multi and I don't think the city at that point would have wanted to rebuild any el structures. I would imagine if that portion had been rebuilt under the dual contracts, then the IND would have connected it up at that point to save on construction costs. |

There is a photo in a book about Bay ridge that shows the 77 St entrance to the 4 Av subway on the N/W corner of 77/4 circa 1917. The only building in the area is the small church that is still there but none of the 6 story apartment houses in the area including the one I live in are there yet. There are not even any small homes in the photo. The subway station in all that wide open space looks even odder than a station at 76/Pitkin would. The subway, however did bring a lot of real estate development to the area. |

It would have been nice if it could have been done that way though. Since it was proposed, I wonder if the city might have been considering upgrading that portion of the el since like Liberty Jct as compared with further continuance of the Pitkin Av subway it would have been cheaper than building a subway and accomplished the same basic purpose. |

I don't see how that would have been possible, as the Dual contracts portion of the Fulton El was from Atlantic Ave to just before Franklin Ave, and that was already duplicated by the Fulton Subway as built. East of there between Atlantic and Hudson, the el was still unimproved el structure. |

I nor no one I know have ever claimed to have been in this station. if it is there, it is behind the wall - a wall which no one wants to touch (more on that later)2) I myself was always a skeptic of 76 street, but the signals facing walls, and cinderblocks clearly built after the original concrete tunnel is all very suggestive. The bench wall was clearly chipped out to make way for it. There is definitely a backfill behind the cinderblocks of an unknown amount of clean sand. Why this area was filled in, and when, is unknown. 3) Not sure if it has been mentioned, but the MTA did at least one short investigation of this mystery and found a water condition. If there's anything back there, it's probably a muddy watery wreck that would cost a prohibitive amount of money to really do much with. 3) The sewer lines at the intersection of 76th street and Pitkin consist of 2 12" pipes laid in 1925 (Pitkin) and 1979 (76th street). These would not be buried deep enough to effect any subway below. I'd be really surprised if we find out what is behind the wall anytime soon. This spot has been debated online for at least a decade and much longer amongst us underground enthusiasts. The cost to seriously investigate plus the MTA's perpetually horrible finances multiplied by the fact that if there's a tunnel decaying back there it will likely need work to stabilize, costing an undetermined amount of money no one has... yields a result of the powers that be really not wanting to know. Plausible deniability should the street become a sinkhole someday. I would say forget myth busters, forget anyone other than a rogue angry mob carrying sledge hammers and shovels ever finding out what is behind the wall. |

They still would have been faced with the same problem of a structure that was unable to support the heavyweight steel cars of the day. also, there was no good place along Fulton St to build such a ramp until ENY where the city could have used Truxton park for a portal instead of just a space under which to build ENY station. |

Very small world! The high school was built with contributions from the parishioners, and my parents sacrificed to help. If they saw the neighborhood now and learned that the high school no longer was that, they'd turn over in their grave. I went to high school in Manhattan, using the Q3A bus and F/7 trains, then spent the afternoons carousing on the entire subway system. The rest is history..... |

Can't remember where I heard this, but a year or two ago, a crew poked a hole in the concrete wall, and water leaked out. They poked a few holes, even going all the way to the top of the tunnel, and still more water leaked out. This would indicate that, at the very least, whatever is behind the wall is completely flooded. But I haven't had a chance to see this for myself, yet. |

It definitely happened, photos were taken of the process. Origins of the water are unknown. You mean that cinderblock wall is actually waterproof. If there is water at the top, middle and bottom, wouldn't it just soak through all the joints (mortar), and the bottom? |

"If they saw the neighborhood now and learned that the high school no longer was that, they'd turn over in their grave. I went to high school in Manhattan, using the Q3A bus and F/7 trains, then spent the afternoons carousing on the entire subway system. The rest is history..... "I drove the Q3A, 4, 4A, 5, 5A, 17, 31, 36, 44A, and 75. And maybe some numbers I left off (but never Vleigh Place or LN Parkway or the Q1). Then I went to the subway, FREG basically; sts. the J or B or D, or CC (on OT) |

It's the street immediately west of 76th St. If you click to one of the newer overlays, street names are on the map as well and you can see how grates look and line up with newer images where they are clearer. |

I looked on Google and what is interesting is that Ruby St and 75 St are shown as alternate names for the same street. The same is true of Pitkin Av which is called alternately Pitkin Av and Old South Rd in the same locations. That may date back to the time when Queens streets bore names instead of numbers. |
