When I returned to the city from out west back in 1982, I noticed that SAPPHIRE ST was indeed signed 78 ST. When the houses on the Brooklyn side were built, it must have finally occurred to somebody that the Brooklyn house numbers they assigned had the potential to clash with those on 78 ST in Bay Ridge. Part of the 600 block was removed there in order to build the Gowanus Expwy, but there was still a potential for problems. I'm told that the street was officially changed back to SAPPHIRE ST in 1994, but that no new signs were ever installed. NYC's LION file has SAPPHIRE ST.Bob |
