Yes, but as to number three, and it has been a while since I was out there, the curve off the yard leads may have been sharper allowing the alignment to follow Sutter Avenue for a while. |

On the map look at the house built on the north west corner of 76th Street/Pitkin Avenue facing Pitkin Avenue. Usually they build a house closer to the corner is it possible that a planned subway entrance was supposed to go at that cormner so they built the house facing Pitkin Avenue further away from the corner? |

When I was at street level with the late ERA VP George Horn, he showed me 2 mounds of earth on the median of conduit Blvd that were supposed to be where A7 and A8 ended. If you carried the pink line at Pitkin Av further south, to the median of Conduit, that would be about where the post 1962 cinder block wall is. |

Also if this alleged station was ever built, did the station extend west of 76th St or east of 76th St? Usually there would have been an exit at either end of the station, one of which would be the 76th St end, but is the 76th St end the east end of the station or the west end of the station. Also, most IND stations have mezzanines. This would mean this station is TWO levels. That's an AWFUL lot of "abandoned" tunnel not being inspected, and another reason I have a hard time believing this is there. |

If my memory serves me correctly, that would be about right. A7 and A8 yard leads had rail installed and were at one time connected by switches to A5 and A6 inside the portal. I haven't been able to find out exactly how far the rail was laid but yard moves were definitely made into those tracks. When I first went in there in 1962, there were no cinder block walls but the tunnels ended in mounds of earth, By that time the switches had been removed and although I don't recall whether or not the rails were still in, I do recall that the home signals and their associated stop arms protecting the now removed switches were still functioning (displaying red over red with the stop arms up of course). By the time I returned there in 1983, the cinder block walls had been put up and the signals although still in place were no longer functioning and the stop arm mechanisms had been removed. Why MOW didn't remove the signals completely for possible use at some other location I never figured out but the lenses on the signals had been removed. As I have mentioned before in other posts where then tracks end under Pitkin Av, the concrete wall at the end of the tunnel has a unique configuration and the S/B lcl tk A1 is shorter than the other 3 tracks so much that a full 600 ft train cannot be laid up there so that track was the least used of any of the lay up tracks in that area since until the C started running there all the service operating to the Euclid area used 600 ft trains. |

Someone should piece together documentation of just what existed in the vicinity of 76th Street around the time the Pitkin subway was being constructed. Of particular interest, was there streetcar service nearby? That should shed some light on station placement, and possibly make more of a case that it may have been built. If was a total wasteland, chances are it wasn't. However, if it was like around the Queens Blvd line through Elmhurst and Forest Hills about the same time, it might have been the equivalent of "67th Avenue," somewhat strengthening the possibility that it did get built. And, those who have claimed to have seen or possess documentation of its existence need to get off their backsides, scan it and post it. Excuses of not having a scanner or anywhere to upload it may have worked 5 or 10 years ago, but not any longer. If you claim it, you prove it. |

If you look, the stations S/O ENY have only one entrance which is approximately at the center of the platforms although Euclid's entrance is closer to the south end of the station. I have seen maps from the late 1930s which show the proposed extension past ENY and the station S/O Euclid is shown as 75 St not 76 St so I would think that the station extends westward from 76 St. From some of the plans I have seen from that portion of the IND, I don't think the B of T had a clear idea of what route the subway was going to take S/O Rockaway Av until some time around unification. The original BMT Fulton St El remained on Fulton St all the way to Van Sinderen Av and had no station at the E/Pky Bway Jct complex. Some original plans called for the IND to continue out Fulton under the BMT Jamaica Line as sort of a direct competition with the BMT and connect to the Liberty Av structure from the north. After unification, the concept of competition was no longer a consideration and instead of continuing straight down Fulton, the subway S/O Rocky Av was routed slightly north under Truxton Park to provide a transfer to the BMT Bway Jct complex. Then is swung south to follow the course of the old BMT Fulton St El with the eventual aim of connecting to the Liberty Av portion from the south and replacement of the old Pitkin Av el structure. Somewhere along the way, the possibility of replacing the BMT Jamaica Line wither in its entirety or by connecting the IND with the structure over Jamaica Av was also considered and occasionally, rough drawings of those plans turn up. |

It may have been on the grid and was required to be included when that plot of land was developed in the 50's. That entire area was pretty undeveloped until after the war. There are houses fronting on it. I doubt the roadway ever left the City map, even if it was a paper street for several years. There's another six-block stretch of Old South Road farther east, between South Conduit Avenue and 130th Street. West of that, the former route is now the Belt Parkway. View Larger Map |

I agree, without proof, we just don't know. But, just because there is no concrete proof...I'm not going to turn around and say, "It ain't there". Now, I'm also not going to say there *is* something there. There is plenty of circumstantial evidence that *suggests* that something *may* be there. That's why I'm trying to get everything we collectively know about it. I actually find it rather fascinating. And..if it turns out to be that there is absolutely nothing there...it's equally fascinating that the rumor lived as it did.Everyone seems to agree that something was planned. The real quesiton is to what extent did anything (if anything) get built. This could be literally be nothing...to a hollowed out section...to a roughed in station...to something being tiled. Me personally...I think it's somewhere in the middle (but that's just my opinion). |

As far as mezzanine levels, I never got off at any of them either so I can't say. I do know that Euclid has a mezzanine since that is where the crew room is. |

Do those stations have mezzanine levels? <<Yes, they each do. Here is an example of one of those stations' mezzanine levels... Every time I say "it's not there", it's mostly a dig at those who insist it is, without proof. Usually these guys always say they have a friend who had a friend who swears he was down there. It's not a proactive declaration that it's definitely not there. |

Well as Teddmann said and I agree that it may or may not exist. Personally, I think there is something there based on the fact they have that wall like that, and the signals but at the same time I wouldn't jump up and down that it is there nor could anyone really jump up and down saying it isn't there. I lean towards your statement that it ain't there until proof but you can't say 100% it isn't there given the circumstantial evidence. |

Some movie company should fix up both the unused sides of the Bowery and/or Canal St. One can be left as a 50's-60's unrenovated station, and the other modernized as a new station. These stations could be used for filming (the track could be put back on the N/B side, so reroutes would still be able to go through. They could be leased to movie studios for all of their subway scenes (instead of Hoyt-Schemehorn). Has lower-level 9th Ave. ever been used for a movie. I know that Ghostbusters used lower 42nd St. |

I know, the wall really lends credence to something being behind it. Still, that really looked like a vault in Al Capone's hotel. |
