I know about the GO at the IRT/BMT connection, but perhaps some other posters don't.

Or perhaps they know but they're simply contributing more information.

One might expect there to be a lot of car sharing on the IRT, but the fact is that, aside from the 2 and 5, there isn't. I ride the 1 on a very regular basis and, until my post a week or two ago about the singles that I spotted, I hadn't seen anything other than VC-assigned R-62A's in unitized sets on the 1 since the 1 and 3 shared fleets 4-5 years ago. The 1 could easily borrow a train from the 2 or 3, but it never does. And the 2 and 3 essentially never borrows a train from the 1. And the 2 and 3 essentially never borrow trains from each other. (The last time I saw an R-142 train on the 3 was in 2003. I've never seen R-62's on the 2, and I last saw R-62A's in 2002.)

(Of course, GO's can change everything, so I'm ignoring them. For instance, when the 2 is diverted to 137, it usually uses some VC-based cars.)

This isn't the B Division, where there's nothing unusual about the same car running on the B yesterday, the W today, and the N tomorrow.

Then again, in the B Division, cars don't routinely swap places just because they happen to share a trunk. The R and W share trackage through basically all of Manhattan, but when was the last time a W borrowed a train of R-46's from the R or an R borrowed a train of R-40's from the W?
