Christ the King, right? That IS a great location! If I recall, where the LIRR and NYCR meet is called Bushwick Junction- at least Hagstrom does. I may have seen it referred to by other names.

If you were in high school after 1988 or so, watching the M would have been very monotonous, as it was pretty much solid Mod 40/42 with occasional Slants thrown in. The 27/30s had mostly moved from the Eastern Division to the C and 6th Avenue Shuttle by that time.

A couple of years ago we were a Little League game in Mafera Park, which forms the SW quadrant of the Junction and bordering the M ROW to the east. At least one kid was distracted by a train passing by and missed a fly ball.

At one point, a loud diesel engine was heard approaching and the ground began to shake. The sound got louder and louder, making me think a long freight consist on the NYCRR, or a long freight or OOS diesel consist on the LIRR, was about to pass. It turned out to be one puny LIRR diesel engine- the same kind that had pulled the pre-double decker passenger consists.
