Maybe the legal barriers should be overcome.But then the question is why the city wanted the Rockaways as part of the subway system? They just don't fit with the core geography of the subway system. They stick out like a sore thumb on a map. It just doesn't seem to make sense. The Brooklyn route doesn't save any time over the ferry, and the straight tunnel route, while it would save a lot of time, would be absurdly expensive. The Brooklyn route has the one-seat (or one-stand) upside, as well as the upside of connecting SI to Brooklyn, but other than that... The better solution might be to give Staten Island back to NJ, where it belongs! |
