It says that the new arena, Barclays in Brooklyn, is inconvenient for Long Island and Queens fans. I find that interesting considering the public transportation options. |

It's not as convenient as Nassau Coliseum which Long Islanders can conveniently drive to. Driving to Brooklyn is a PITA, and then it's even harder to park. Taking the train to Brooklyn is a PITA.I never said the location of Nassau was inconvenient. It's actually highly convenient for LOng Islanders. It's the stadium that's a dump, not the location. |

In other words:1) Our fans are far more apprehensive about going to Brooklyn than Manhattan. OR 2) If our fans have to pay LIRR fares to Zone 1, they'd rather see the Rangers. Bettman said at an Associated Press Sports Editors meeting that the league was helping the Islanders explore their options “in the metropolitan area” and that moving the team to outside New York was not currently being considered. Which leaves the question of where a stadium would go, and who'd be dumb enough to subsidize the Islanders. |

That presumes that John Tavares, who had a breakout season, isn't one of the league's top stars by this point. In the meantime, I may take in a KHL game if they actually follow through with their plans to play games at Barclays. |

If they won't move to Brooklyn then it's time for the League to step in and move them somewhere useful. That's only because Rangers fans actually use the LIRR. Islanders fans do not (except in the rare cases when they are playing the Rangers). No ones "apprehensive" about going to Manhattan or Brooklyn, but when you currently have a stadium that's in a very easy location to drive to and park at, in a population that's used to driving anyway for everything, and then you take that easy option away, yes, it would be a PITA. |

Travel arrangements for the most part. While yes, you have to travel to any of those other teams, Nassau Coliseum site is very centrally located and easy to get to for most Long Islanders, even if you are in suffolk. It's a short drive, very easy to park. Anything involving the city often takes away the "easy driving" option. |

NYC already has a hockey team, they don't really need two. While the fanbases obviously overlap even where they are now, there's still a distinctive fanbase that will be eroded if it's also a city team. |

I rarely take the LIRR but usually drive to Queens and take the subway. Especially on Sundays when I usually go when you don't have to feed the meter you can usually find a spot right at the subway staircases at either Union Tnpk or 75th Av. |

Yeah, I have done that myself. I almost never take the LIRR into Manhattan, but I if I don't drive into Manhattan, I do often drive to a subway station in Brooklyn or Queens, park, and then take the subway into Manhattan.I have done that for Yankees games to, although then I usually drive the Grand Central to the Triborough Bridge, park around 125th St and Lexington, take the 4 train up 3 stops. After the game, jump on the subway down a few stops, hop in my car, and within minutes I am back on the Grand Central... I avoid taking the LIRR whenever possible, as I like to be on my own schedule. There wouldn't be an easy way to drive to the Barclays Center, it's almost a force that you would have to take the LIRR, and that would suck. I don't have the patience anymore for the LIRR, call me "spoiled", but I just don't want to do it anymore. |

Basketball has a significant appeal to inner city minorities. Hockey? Even I don't like it. |

I don't know how lucrative the Islanders television deal is. They have no chance of starting their own RSN in NY. In Canada, they might do just as well on television because of the status of hockey up there. |

In the latest volley between the New Jersey Devils and Newark Mayor Corey Booker, the NHL team’s managing partner says he now regrets bringing the team to town.Jeff Vanderbeek told the Star-Ledger of Newark that friends warned him not to invest $185 million to help the city build the Prudential Center. Booker has criticized Vanderbeek after arbitrators ruled April 3 largely in favor of the Devils in an ongoing dispute over shared arena proceeds. Booker called Vanderbeek a “high-class, highfalutin’ huckster and hustler” and “one of the most despicable owners” in the NHL. Vanderbeek called the remarks unfair and accused Booker of political grandstanding. “In maybe a year-and-a-half, he’s trying to undo six years of being this outsider because he may have to get elected mayor again,” Vanderbeek told the Star-Ledger. “I’m the most convenient target.” Booker had previously praised Vanderbeek as a “lifelong partner” to the city, who had created a “community center” with the arena. Vanderbeek took note of the change of heart. “You have a mayor saying to business, ‘You come in and I’ll cut you a deal,’” Vanderbeek told the paper. “But if I don’t like you in a couple of years, or if something happens, or if I get up on the wrong side of the bed, you know what? I’m coming after you.” Despite the flame war, Vanderbeek says he is “still open to doing anything that will benefit the city of Newark. |

Not a chance, that's the problem. NYC doesn't need two hockey teams. The fan base is thinned out enough just being in the NYC Metro area, much less in the city itself. Lots of LIers are Rangers fans too. Hockey has a more limited following than any of the four major sports, hockey being after Football as first, baseball, basketball. |

Even when the Islanders are on, you don't even see them playing in bars around here, the Rangers and even the Devils are on more. Hockey isn't a huge sport. It may be bigger than Soccer for example, but even if an Islanders game is on, it doesn't mean it will even play in local bars, unlike football or baseball where you always see the local football or baseball teams on if they are on. |

I'm an Islanders fan, but I admit there's a huge Rangers following, many of my friends are too. I know you are being sarcastic, so there's no need to elaborate. But it was sobering going to an Islanders game at Nassau in which they were playing the Rangers a year ago. It was quite sobering seeing a home stadium being taken over by the visiting team's fans. The place was about 60-40 in the Rangers favor (and I am probably being kind). Every time the usual chant would start "Let's Go Islanders", it was immediately taken over and changed to Rangers. I never seen a home stadium go so much over to the visiting side. The Islanders were like a visiting team in their own stadium, it was sad actually. |

Mississauga and Hamilton - Toronto Maple Leafs would object, and Copps Coliseum in Hamilton (which will be vacant after next season unless a junior hockey team, probably the Erie Otters, whose lease is up, moves in) is not exactly up to NHL standards.Houston - more likely a possibility for the Coyotes if their ownership situation cannot be settled. Seattle - not without a new arena; the junior hockey team that shared the arena with the Sonics left the then-KeyArena the same year the Sonics left because the sightlines were horrible. Quebec City is most likely the destination for the Islanders if not Brooklyn. An arena must seat at least 15,000 for ice hockey (the current smallest arena in the NHL is 15,004 seats in Winnipeg). |
