While obviously there are mostly pennies. ALL denominations of coins spend time in jars unused. Most people dont want to use change...and even a huge percentage of dollar coins do and will do the same thing till cashed in for paper.....much more dollar coins would sit idle in jars than dollar bills sit uncirculated. |

Actually, my aversion to change does make for some "extra" money. While it's not techncally "extra", when it gets saved up like that, you do all of a sudden have 'extra" money when you cash it in. I have liked going to the bank with a large coffee can or two of change, and walking out with a couple hundred dollars in paper money. You are right, it is somewhere between $600-$1000 a year, as I usually get about $180-$200 each time I go, and it's once every 4 or so months. And yes, it's "no interest", but in the bank you get less than 1%, sometmes .02%!, so it's not like much is lost on a few hundred dollars. |

How many dollar coins have been introduced and failed to catch on. Same with the $2 bill. What isn't stored away in federal vaults are in peoples' top dresser drawers. Since many more dollar coins will sit idle in containers than dollar bills do now, something will have to make up for that, and that would be more two dollar bills because of the fact that that currency won't be horded instead of in circulation. If 4 people have 5 dollar bills each, but in the future will need 3 $2 bills to cover that, as the dollar coin will be stowed. |

It doesn't work here only because people are stubborn and have an aversion to change (as in change of their way of life, not coin style change). In Canada, the dollar bill was eliminated in 1987 and life went on... there was no rioting in the streets, no whining and crying like a bunch of spoiled babies, no nothing. The people eventually got used to it, just like anything else. If try the same thing in the U.S., after the riots and whining and crying dies down, everybody will get used to it... |

I don't recall exactly -- and am too lazy to look it up before I go to bed -- but isn't it something along the lines of a President can only be elected twice. So if a President were to die in office with 18 months left in his term, then the Vice President could serve the last 18 months and then serve an additional 8 years. You are correct. However if a VP succeeds a President who still had more than 24 months left in office (like Ford did), he/she can only run once. Had Ford won in 1976 he would have been term-limited after that even though it would have been his sole election. However LBJ was not limited in 1968 since JFK had only about 14 months left in his term when Johnson succeeded him. It's why LBJ was able to run (briefly) in 1968. |

I was being a bit sarcastic, but my point was that as far as I know, there are no "coin-free" places in the world, and if anything it is going more the other way as time goes on. And the way I look at it, SMAZ was not "forcing his preferences" on Chris, he was just going along with the way the world is headed nowadays. But overall, nobody is "wrong" here...Chris prefers no coins while SMAZ prefers coins...but out of the two, SMAZ is the realistic one since coins are not going away anytime soon... |

Yes, but in just about all of your posts you referred to all coins as "nuisance coins". I don't know of anybody else that speaks of coins that way....but in any case it seems that countries are considering replacing bills with coins because the coins last much longer than bills, which would make it more cost effective in the long run. So if that's their reasoning, it's tough to argue with that... |

It's not tough to argue with at all. First off, bills are far more convenient to use. That's why they REPLACED coins to begin with long ago. Universal credit/debit card use would completely take away the need for the government to even spend money making money, but that doesn't mean they should do that either. |
