I see nothing wrong with discussing sexual orientation in High School but elementary school and Middle School (which the proposed bill targets) is just too damn young. I don't even think they should discuss any sex, gay or straight, in elementary or middle school. This is not hateful ideas, it's common sense. Why? Sex and sexuality is something they will encounter and kids often begin to experiment with it (especially black and brown kids) in middle school. Why should they not be educated on this enormous facet of life? |

I'd be livid if this situation happened to me. A lot of my friends who have school aged kids are complaining that the schools are calling them for every little thing. I want is for teachers to stick to the curricula that is required, especially in the K through 6 grades. You do realize that times changes, and with it, so does the curriculum (a pesky little thing called progress)? For an educator to insinuate himself or herself into the discussion by supposing that he or she knows whats best for (MY) child is ludicrous. Yep, just as we've decided it's best that they know that a2+b2=c2 on the right triangle (and not the isosceles triangle Mr. Scarecrow). These discussions are more school appropriate in the later grades when childrens minds are not so vulnerable and they can make their own decisions. 'cause you never know the queers could leap out of the closet and from under desks, but better to tell them about the gays when they are older and better able to defend themselves... Substitute "blacks" for "gays" and see how this discussion resembles one that happened decades ago. I remembered learning black history in grade school myself. |

Everything eventually is "science" but teaching homosexuality in schools is social indoctrination as admitted by many posts in this thread. The idea is that "we have to teach kids the right way to think before they learn the wrong way". There is no right or wrong way to think. And yes I would lump black history under "social issues" depending on the content. Obviously teaching about slavery, jim crow, civil rights, etc are a legitimate subject as they were very much a part of American history. Teaching that George Washington Carver was gay while interesting, is irrelevant since his being gay had nothing to do with his accomplishments. Teaching about Harvey Milk, while interesting, is only doing so because of his sexuality since he accomplished relatively little in his lifetime. |
