The problem is that some kids learn such things from their parents. We should think about requiring that kids of a certain age attend a government sponsored summer camp where they can be instructed on how to think the right way without the negative influences that they encounter at home. Or even better parents should be required to pass a government test so that they can demonstrate correct thinking before being allowed to raise any children. Just throwing some ideas out there. |

Hmm, they were dropping in the 90's and beyond, right up until at least 2005, according to Time Magazine . Interestingly it seemed to jump up again.Does that mean we should try to hide this information from teens, go back to preaching nothing but "abstinence until marriage", so they can rebel and info about sex on the street or internet, though? Kids don't get interested in sex at the age of 16, 18, etc...it starts younger than that, which was my point, and it's shocking what kids know these days at various ages. And with all the STDs out there and all the free porn sites displaying unsafe sexual practices, I think it's important for the youth to understand what's out there, debunk myths, and protect themselves...but that's just me, anyway. |

Oh yes, I can certainly agree with that. I didn't mean to state that teaching kids about sex would eradicate teenage pregnancy (one could argue that the "issue" is more than just sex ed in that case), just like telling kids all about the dangers of smoking didn't eliminate the practice of kids picking up cigarettes and smoking. Also, I didn't have my kids yet...but I do believe in the power of knowledge and education, and am witnessing that the more people try to "hide" things from kids, the more the kids seems to be finding out on their own... |

Let me give you a little bit of fact here. Except for one very confused individual, the majority of people advocating the position that the government should make the decision of what and when to teach children in issues other than academics, such as sex education, multiculturalism and religion are the same people who have no children. The people who have children want to teach their children what they feel is appropriate based on their moral or ethical standards. Now, of course some idiot is now going to say, "Sure, teach your kids that the world is flat." or some such nonsense, knowing that is not what I meant. Of course, once children begin to enter their teens, they begin to naturally form their own opinions. If and when you do have children, I'm certain that you will want your children raised with your moral & ethical codes and not by one decided on by a committee of civil servants and politicians. |
