The legislation, dubbed the "don't say gay" bill, states teachers cannot "provide any instruction or material that discusses sexual orientation other than heterosexuality." Republican Stacey Campfield, the bill's sponsor, has argued the move is "neutral," according to the Knoxville News Sentinel. "We should leave it to families to decide when it is appropriate to talk with children about sexuality - specifically before the eighth grade," he added. But gay rights activists are blasting the legislation, which passed 6-3, as a form of discrimination. It "limits what teachers and students are able to discuss in the classroom," Ben Byers of the Tennessee Equality Project told LBGTQ Nation. "It means they can't talk about gay issues or sexuality even with students who may be gay or have gay family." The bill will now head to the full state Senate. After visiting one of his rental properties, city inspectors found 47 violations and ruled the home "unfit for human habitation." Campfield naturally blamed it on his renters. But his explanation rings hollow. Among the problems were a basement flooded by raw sewage, rigged electrical wiring, and a furnace that didn't work. But when the students complained about Campfield's slow repairs, he threatened to sue them, bragging that his connections made him immune to remedy. Can you say "douchebag," boys and girls? Fortunately for the kids, they kept detailed records, even taking video of the aquarium of feces that once was their basement. Read the story, and you can't help but believe the students are telling the truth... The greater question is why we keep electing these people. Last week, Jeff Woods reported on the adventures new House Speaker Kent Williams, Noted Pervert. And he's actually an upgrade over the guy he beat for the speaker's chair, Jason Mumpower, 13th Century Preservationist. Campfield provides an even greater study in psychological abnormality. By day he's among the shrillest, most conservative members of the House, a braying moralist and man of God. (Get a load of his website, which carries the spirit and linguistic qualities of that mean little seventh grader you suspect of torturing cats.) By night he allows renters to live above a sewage containment pond. What Would Jesus Do? He'd politely ask Campfield if he'd be interested in converting to atheism. So while the rest of the country just dumped George Bush, Tennessee's still stuck with people who make Bush seem like John C. Calhoun. I don't know about you, but this doesn't speak to a promising future. |

I know you're a little dense, so I will say it again. "Diversity" and "tolerance" are vague concepts whose definitions differ from person to person. It's not right to force a parent to allow their kids to be taught something they personally disagree with. That's why I usually oppose teaching kids any of this "tolerance" stuff, to avoid the conflicts. Teach them what they really need to know, like math and science. Leave the moralizing to the appropriate people. |

I see nothing wrong with discussing sexual orientation in High School but elementary school and Middle School (which the proposed bill targets) is just too damn young. I don't even think they should discuss any sex, gay or straight, in elementary or middle school. This is not hateful ideas, it's common sense. |

I remember when kids played Dr. while learning about sex and sexualaty and did perfectly fine on their own. We grew up relatively normal and fairly well adjusted without pictures and charts and dry school classes.True story: My #4 grand daughter is 5 years old. She kissed a classmate on the cheek. Teacher saw it and pulled her out of class. They called my daughter and told her that my grand daughter was being interviewed by the school psychologist but she didn't need to be there. My daughter was enraged as was I. This politically correct shit is so out of hand that it's to the point where they are doing more harm to the kids than helping. |
