There are capped wells all over the Western US that will be uncapped when it becomes cheaper to do so rather than import oil. That has nothing to do with Democrats or Republicans, but simple economics. To blame a political party for that is stupid. We also have untapped reservoirs of natural gas that are more expensive to tap than to import. Once that tide changes we will tap them.If we develop alternatives in addition to using the above sources we probably won't need to drill in the ocean and risk another disaster like we had in the Gulf of Mexico last year. your pal, Fred |

The price is set by world markets, not by "us".When Libya's exports are crimped, the countries that rely on Libya have to look elsewhere. The price rises unless world supply increases. Where "we" import it from is irrelevant. Saudi Arabia can unleash over 2 MILLION extra barrels per DAY within weeks if they wanted to. In comparison, when deep offshore drilling in the Gulf of Mexico was temporarily suspended last year, there was only a loss of 200,000 barrels per day. Piddly shit. The markets didn't even notice. |

The water cooled uranium design is a proven failure for power generation, though. There are other designs that use othermaterials that are far safer. There are smaller safer nuclear generators that can be deployed on a small scale- villages or neighborhoods- and provide not only ample power, but heating and hot water as well. Since I don't hear anything much about these technologies in the RW dominated "mainstream media", I find it hard to support what the republicans want. Which is behemoth, polluting, dangerous water cooled uranium based plutonium generators while being held blameless for the consequences and risks to the general public. I'll pass on being irradiated, with no recourse for any damages incurred, for someone else's profit. |

Jobs in the oil or other energy industries (and related steel, construction, energy crops, etc) are GOOD jobs.I'd rather see 200,000 waitresses and fast food workers lose their jobs if the tradeoff is 100,000 new jobs in or related to the domestic energy industry whether it's in fossil fuels (for now) or in alternative energy and their suppliers. For that we need higher oil prices. If prices were to gradually go up to $200 within two-three years, we would see a flourishing of good jobs in both new and old industries and services. Other categories would lose their jobs? So what? |
