It's the "Klan flag" to people from New York who like to put down Southerners.it IS the Klan flag. Why do you think that racists from even Idaho or Michigan (who have nothing to do with South) fly it at their rallies? |

I drove through there because there was heavy traffic on the 105 and 405 and I had GPS and was staying downtown. It does look like a nice neighborhood, especially compared to "the hood." |

People will be offended by that too. It's all about being offended.Let them be. There are people offended by the US Flag. It's the "Klan flag" to people from New York who like to put down Southerners. False, the flag with the dimensions of the Confederate Naval Jack and the colors of the Battle Flag IS the Klan flag. |

There's a big difference between a minor nuisance and total deterioration of a neighborhood.A bar that is prone to fights isn't a "minor nuisance." |

This is absolutely true.Last year there was an article in the NEws about white girls getting harrased in Bed-Stuy & Clinton Hill. THe article even went onto say that while they were being verbally harassed by young black males, older males across the street sat and laughed. They also through around the term vanilla and snow white. Of course this was buried in the middle of the paper. |

Fair enough, I happen to disagree. But in any event when was the last white family that moved in? Why wouldn't an old white family still living there encourage their children to either take over the home or purchase a home close to them rather than running out to LI, SI or NJ?If what you claim is correct, this would not be an issue and Real Estate firms wouldn't keep changing the name of the remaining white communities to calm the fears. I.E. Flatlands became Old MIll Basin, Then when Old Mill Basin went down the drain and it creeped into Mill Basin, Mill Basin was changed to Mill Island. |

The children have to move out before their parents die. If they already have a house, why would they assume their parents' house?Mill Island was called Mill Island long before "minorities" began moving into Old Mill Basin. The reason for "old" is because OMB was developed in the 1920s while MB was developed in the 1960s. |

Why wouldn't an old white family still living there encourage their children to either take over the home or purchase a home close to them rather than running out to LI, SI or NJ?Because one can get larger and newer housing in the burbs on a larger plot of land? FWIW, I'm black and my parents bought their home from a Jewish family that sold their mother's home after she passed away, and this is in a neighbourhood that has some of the best middle class schools on Long Island. If children don't buy in their former locales, then the only choice that's left is for the the dreaded non-whites (or poorer whites) to purchase the homes unless one believes that homes would be better as abandoned properties... |

Maybe some of that is true but the fact of the matter is very simple and clear. IF the community has gone from white to non-white and it is obvious that the community is in decline, the white children will NOT purchase the homes out of fear of crime or fear of falling real estate values. It is a dam shame and I have to admit that racism plays a role. But many times the racism is based on fear and crime statistics. I knew people that ran out of Canarsie to buy homes with less land and less property but they were in a more "SOLID" community like the South SHore of Staten Island.Think about this for a minute, why in the world would a white family sell a detached renovated home on a nice tree-lined block in Canarsie and move to a semi-attached smaller home on Staten Island with less land and no garage. WHy would they put up with a toll and longer commute from Staten Island when Canarsie in my opinion is a better community. There is direct subway and express bus service, there is easy access to the Belt and JFK, there are many nice homes with nice pieces of property, there is a rich history, why flee to toxic Staten Island?? Unfortunately you know the answer and I will say it again, it is a shame! |

Because the Confederate Flag has come to represent a lifestyle. Country music, BBQ's, pickup trucks, and alcohol.Bullshit. I know decent people from all over America and all walks of life who enjoy the "country music, BBQ, pickups and alcohol" lifestyle who don't fly that traitorous flag and are repulsed by what it represents. Young racists in Michigan or California who listen to Nazi Metal bands would care less about country music and BBQs, yet they fly that flag. Guess why? |
