You are fooling yourself. While that is generally true, race plays a big part.Strong words. As I said to LuchAAA, you're just reading certain demographic correlations as causing bad neighborhoods. I don't care what race my neighbors are, white, polka dot, hispanic, Aleutian, I just care that I have a quality living environment. No parties at 3am, no muggings are a way of life, no 55 people living in the 1BR/1BA unit next door, no burglaries being routine, no trek to transit and quality food, no lack of amenities, etc. |

I brought up Corona Queens, and he wants to live in Flushing. Both neighborhoods are close together, with the only major difference being the demographics. If you really think that, that's because you see everything through the lens of race. Question: how many buildings in Corona have a swimming pool, doorman, and panoramic vistas? Question 2: how many supermarkets are there in Corona equal to the quality and bargains offered by the Chinese megamarts in Flushing? 3: Does the restaurant scene in Corona compare to that of Flushing? 4: Is noise/crime level the same? 5: How about accessibility to transit? Since Flushing is a hub, it's easy to get around - from Corona, there's backtracking or circuitous routes. E.g., I want to get to Mineola, I just take any number of buses to Jamaica, many making only limited stops, and get on LIRR. So there is someone fooling someone, but it's not me at either end of it. |

Yes, perhaps too strong. I would have edited, but you know...I'm not saying that you care what race, religion, etc your neighbors are, but I do remember that you were cool with profiling individuals (regardless of race). Given that how could you not know that - in general but not always - neighborhoods with more black residents have more crime? And I don't think that is an uncommon thought process. People do consider race. At least Americans that have experience with different races would. |

But one usually goes with the other, and quality-of-life will almost always deteriorate when certain demos reach a critical mass. But looking to demographics will only get you, even per your own statement, the usually correct result. Trust me, when you're spending several hundred thousand dollars, you focus in on the most reliable indicators of quality of life, which are the indicators themselves, not the demographics you suppose they're usually correlated with. |

I'm not saying that you care what race, religion, etc your neighbors are, but I do remember that you were cool with profiling individuals (regardless of race).I stated that it's situational. If it's a mostly black neighborhood and a white guy in a nice car is parking after hours with the engine idling, I think that the police should talk to him. That's a better use of police resources than just pulling over every 3rd car. Given that how could you not know that - in general but not always - neighborhoods with more black residents have more crime? Spending a lot of money on real estate, you don't go with usually - you go with the best indicator that you can get. Several people I know made huge increases in net worth by moving to Harlem and they weren't black or hispanic. |

I miss my quiet, multicultural, predominantly white neighborhood in Long Beach, CA. But I guess that my current neighborhood isn't really so much as louder as it's more dense so there are many more people within 200 yards of me. I've gotten used to the summer quinceanera's and cookouts every weekend. The music generally stops by 9 or 10pm. But what I haven't gotten used to is the inconsiderate people that honk car horns at 6am, or the ones that block my car in with theirs, and the omnipresent threat of crime that is lifestyle changing. |

It seems that good schools are usually due to good parents, so if you're going to be the same kind of parent to the kids, the school doesn't matter.OTOH nobody wants to send their kids to a school with a gang problem. So I'd probably choose a school district based on its juvenile crime rate rather than the school's academic performance. |

I say that b/c I want to avoid Hispanics. I always had be experiences with Hispanic neighbors, which is why I now try to avoid them. I know exactly what you're talking about with the honking horns too. It's a macho thing. A Nissan with tinted windows, blue lights, loud music, and louder muffler, pulls up and starts honking the horn instead of using a cell phone. Why do your male Hispanic neighbors do that? Attention. Cred. They want people to look at them, so they don't use the cell or text. |
