Then what that tells me is that the EU policy needs to change. All passengers entering the EU from outside the EU must be required to de-plane, claim baggage, re-check baggage, and be re-screened. That's SOP in the United States and Canada.

Depending on the country, a transit visa should also be required.

Ah okay. But my original point stands...ALL passengers flying from one country A to another B and then into a third C should be re-screened in the second country, because country A can't always be trusted to catch errors.

Then what do you do about someplace like Lagos, where I bet they don't screen (or do a cursory look at them for bulging bags or pockets)?

I've flown out of Lagos -- March 2001. Here was my security experience.

Arrive at flight counter 9:30PM for an 11:45 PM departure. Get the once over with a hand-held metal detector. Check bags. Head over to the passport control area. At passport control, they check your ticket and passport. They open all of your carry-on and go through it (to the point of finding one of my wife's bras buried in the corner of my carry-on -- I was traveling alone and a bit embarrassed....). Through a stand-up metal detector and then one more time get a once-over with a hand-held.

Proceed to the gate. About two gates before the departure gate, I am instructed to go down a set of stairs onto the tarmac. There, in nearly complete darkness and with a few soldiers bearing automatic weapons I am told to identify my checked bags in order for them to be loaded onto the plane. Back upstairs where I wait for boarding to begin. Finally, once the flight is boarding they go over each passenger one more time with a hand-held.

I haven't flown out of Lagos in 8+ years now, but can confidently say that a blanket statement that they don't try is false. Unfortunately, part of the need for the multiple checks is that there are likely gaps which weren't apparent to me.

Nigerian civil aviation officials have a lot of explaining to do after this one. Lagos - Murtala Mohammed Airport already has a bad rep in international travel circles. That now its graduated into being the point of origin for an attempted international terrorist only makes matters worse.

No doubt about that. But the TSA will also need to explain how the person would have been caught by our security procedures. There was no metal involved -- only liquids and powders. If he dutifully kept his liquids in small bottles there would be no reason to stop him.

What would that have achieved in this case? How is a Dutch screening any different than a Nigerian one. Passengers are very rarely subjected to the explosives screening (for me, it's very roughly about 1 in every 20 flights) and we have no idea about whether the powder he carried would have been caught by that screen.

It has been well know for quite some time that you can mix up a bomb with household chemicals and that flights are at risk to this type of attack. We've been fortunate thus far that it is not easy to do -- and people trained to do it correctly and bright enough to do it correctly are generally not willing to blow themselves up...

It will be interesting to see how this story develops, but as of now it appears that this was a guy who was recruited by Al Qaeda with instruction in how to blow up a plane and given specific instructions to wait until the plane was in US airspace to do it (read -- with the hopes of killing Americans on the ground as well).

I know this frustrates those who want to go back to a less restrictive security environment in our public spaces, but the threat is real -- however infrequent -- and the targets are American citizens.

You are looking at the world through a very American-centric viewpoint.

For most people in the rest of the world (excluding perhaps China, Canada, Australia and maybe one or two other countries) just about every flight they take lands in another country. That means if they are connecting (and air travel in 2009 means you very likely are) they would have to be screened and re-screened. It just isn't practical.

In order to convince people that it were necessary, you'd need to show how it would produce a better result. I don't think you (or anyone) can do that.

That's the sick part in some of these countries, and why that may need to be considered on transfer flights. That seems to go further than the absurd "can't get out of your seat in the last hour, nor touch any personal items" in the last hour of flights which the FAA just instituted. Ridiculous.

I feel no less comfortable with it than I do with the thought of flying in general.

On 9/11, some of the hijackers cleared security in Portland, Maine and then flew to Boston before boarding one of the hijacked flights. We didn't clamor then to have all passengers re-clear security after every flight leg, did we?

If all international connecting passengers were required to re-clear there would be massive congestion to clear security at the major airports in the world. It is only really the US where the majority of flights are domestic and not international.

But it doesn't need to involve all countries. If you "trust" Germany for example, planes from there wouldn't have to get passengers rescreened. It all amounts to if there are acceptable standards at the "trusting" or non trusting countries.

So explain to me how it would work.

The flight lands from Lagos in Amsterdam. Passengers who are headed for Amsterdam obviously head for customs. Passengers who are transferring do what -- queue up somewhere to show where they are headed next, so that each destination country can be checked against the origin country to see if that passenger needs to be rescreened? What if the person has two connections (Lagos-Amsterdam-Detroit-Vancouver) -- how many times do they get rescreened?

There aren't separate lines because transferring passengers don't need to be rescreened.

You guys -- just like the TSA -- are attacking the wrong problem.

The TSA seems to think the problem is people going to the bathroom during the last hour of the flight.

You guys seem to think that the problem is people needing to be screened multiple times.

The problem is that there isn't an airport in the world where this guy would have been detected by security (at least not that I've flown through -- and I'm flying close to 100,000 miles per year the last few years).

You could screen people (with current procedures) 50 times. The metal detector won't beep for liquids and powders.

But which countries would that be? And how would you execute this in practice? Remember, not all transferring passengers are headed for the US. Some might be headed for, say, Canada -- which might have an entirely different list of countries that they "trust".

Further, the US tested security at LOS just last month and kept it on their trusted list.

It's not the official list. I should have it up by 12/30.

What two names don't belong?

Me for one. The fact that the terrorist is Muslim is completely relevant to me.

Right. They mention the guy's ties to Yemen, Saudi Arabia, and Al Qaeda, and he has "Abdul" as part of his name. But they haven't suggested that he's an Islamic terrorist.

Times readers may be more intelligent than you think. They can figure it out.

To the extent the list as written was not exhaustive, I cannot for the life of me imagine you are off the LOL once again after just being reinstated less than one month ago. Unless there are limited slots on the list, you are safe so you need not be unduly concerned. The comprehensive LOL for 2009 will appear later this week so let's wait and see. Beyond that, word is you and bingbong are among the leading candidates for the #1 ranking on the initial 2010 LOL although RIPTA42HopeTunnel and AlM along with RPanse, to their credit, are quietly gaining ground with a final push of blatantly partisan posts. It is not really important since all that matters is where you finish.

I'm gaining ground? If I'd really wanted to gain ground, I wouldn't have told TD that my reply to him was a joke. :)

I call bullshit on you. Again. No response on that one yet.

Saturday's NY Times had TWO front page articles about Islamic terrorist. One article was about KSM and his trial in Manhattan. The other was about the african Muslim terrorist who tried to blow up an US airliner.

In both articles, they never used the words "Islam" or "Muslim".

How about this article?

It uses the following words, among others:

Yemen

Al Qaeda

Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab

extremist religious views

Saudi Arabia

radical Yemeni cleric

imam

Nidal Hasan

Pakistan

And, of yeah, this one too....

Islam

But it's that politically correct mentality that stops the NY Times from using words like "Muslim" and "Islam". This is to appeal to people like you Al.
