Why does it need to change? It makes flying more convenient. You're asking that passengers be screened twice just because they are changing planes.

The trouble is, as Charles says, that you make travel that much more onerous. And, mind you, it's a bit like eliminating the last car on the train. Seems to me that one wants proper screening at the initial boarding.

Actually, the flight originated in Nigeria, then flew to Amsterdam, and then on to Detroit.

Luch, I see on Subchat that someone attacked a conductor on MN. By your line of "reasoning," no one should even use MN again because this is the second time a conductor was attacked.

Fortunately, it wasn't the main brewery. It was a little-used storage building where they were replacing the roof felt and a torch set it on fire. Very smoky, and a good deal of damage to the roof of that building, but the brewery itself was safe.

This guy took a KLM flight from Lagos to Hashishville, Nederlands. Perhaps the solution here would have been invading the EU to satisfy Olog, and everyone flies nekkid to the USA ... I'm sure Hamsterdam would have no problem with it, and they'd be giggling at the opportunity. But it was not a "thru" flight when this pax moved from a KLM flight to a Delta/NWA flight ... it's not like he stayed on the same plane.

In seriousness, perhaps carriers heading TO the US might be required to do a shoe sniff and a nice body cavity search ... after all, Hamsterdamn is a place you go for SeXXX anyway, might as well go whole hog. :)

What does the altitude have to do with anything? Being attacked is being attacked. A bomb on a train (e.g., England or Spain); a chemical weapon attack in the subway (Japan); or a shoe bomber on a plane...you're dead either way if the attack is successful. I can't say that hurtling along in a metal tube at 50 - 90 mph with no way out is any better than in a metal tube at 35,000 feet.

Fear of flying is also called Aviophobia. It is an anxiety disorder. The fear of flying may be created by various other phobias and fears:

* a fear of closed in spaces (claustrophobia), such as that of an aircraft cabin
* a fear of heights (acrophobia)
* a feeling of not being in control
* fear of vomiting, motion sickness can make the person vomit, thus making flying hard.
* fear of having panic attacks in certain places, where escape would be difficult and/or embarrassing (agoraphobia)
* fear of hijacking or terrorism
* fear of turbulence
* fear of flying over water or night flying
* fear of crashing resulting in injury or death
* the result of hormone release during pregnancy
* the result of difficulty with the regulation of emotion when not in control due to developmental issues.

If fear of flying is not irrational, then why are there behavioral therapy treatments for it? And did you know that recent neurological research suggests that fear of flying is not the result of a single sensitizing event, but - like other affective disorders - is the result of chronic exposure to emotional dysregulation in childhood which hindered development of the right prefrontal orbito cortex, rendering it unable to carry out its executive role in the regulation of affect?

Did you catch the word ** disorders ** in there, Luch?

You're in good company, though - Kim Jong Il suffers from fear of flying.

No idea whether passengers have to reclear security if they are transiting through Amsterdam, but security at the airport in Lagos isn't exactly known for being the best...

The Dutch now say he did not go through passport control in Amsterdam. So probably he either stayed on the plane, or else stayed in a transit lounge without having to go through a search in Amsterdam.

Well, if transiting passengers are never screened again, then the entire world's security system is only as good as its weakest link.

Would you feel OK about taking a flight from Zurich to NY if you knew there were people on the plane who had flown from Teheran to Zurich and then not been subject to an additional search in Zurich?

Maybe the answer is that arriving passengers from countries with dubious security get discharged outside the security barrier. After all, that already frequently happens (for Customs and Immigration reasons, not security) if you fly from overseas to the US and change to a domestic flight.

Actually, they should be re-screened even if on the same plane, if the landing occurs in a country that is different from the origin.

Last night they split his last name into 2 or three pieces(commie news network). Today it's reassembled with a first and middle name added.

I'd have more, but I follow my sleep on it rule now and wait for all the pieces to get together instead of watching the ratings game of let's see who can scoop what's false first.

OTOH, I do miss those tv interviews where someone says something the station doesn't like and they never replay the clip ever again.
So it's not a steadfast rule yet.

Still waiting for the other 3 men at the fort hood thing to be caught you know.
That's where the 9/11 conspiracies come from. BBC had advanced knowledge of the building 7? Puhleese, they were hurrying for a scoop and mucked up.

The National Safety Council estimates 317 traffic fatalities for this weekend.

These estimates and a running total of such fatalities used to be a regular part of holiday weekend news broadcasts on radio.

317 for a 3-day weekend vs. 700 for a week. How reassuring that detailed statistical estimates from the National Safety Council can be reproduced on the back of an envelope. :)

Broadcasting the holiday road carnage provided shock value. It was pointed out at that time that holiday road kill was not that much different from non-holidays.

No, the passenger originated in Nigeria. Delta doesn't fly to Lagos-Amsterdam. He flew KLM from Lagos to Amsterdam then took a Delta/Northwest flight from Amsterdam to Detroit.

It was a different plane from Lagos-AMS than AMS-DTW.

Would you feel OK about taking a flight from Zurich to NY if you knew there were people on the plane who had flown from Teheran to Zurich and then not been subject to an additional search in Zurich?

I do that everytime I fly, and will do it again Monday morning. (Actually, I'm not sure you can fly Tehran-Zurich -- but your point is well taken). TSA signed off on Lagos security just last month.

Since the advent of Schengen, this is the reality in just about every continental European airport.

Maybe the answer is that arriving passengers from countries with dubious security get discharged outside the security barrier. After all, that already frequently happens (for Customs and Immigration reasons, not security) if you fly from overseas to the US and change to a domestic flight.

That happens for all passengers arriving in the US. The US is one of the very few countries where this is the case.
