What does the altitude have to do with anything? Being attacked is being attacked. A bomb on a train (e.g., England or Spain); a chemical weapon attack in the subway (Japan); or a shoe bomber on a plane...you're dead either way if the attack is successful. I can't say that hurtling along in a metal tube at 50 - 90 mph with no way out is any better than in a metal tube at 35,000 feet.Fear of flying is also called Aviophobia. It is an anxiety disorder. The fear of flying may be created by various other phobias and fears: * a fear of closed in spaces (claustrophobia), such as that of an aircraft cabin * a fear of heights (acrophobia) * a feeling of not being in control * fear of vomiting, motion sickness can make the person vomit, thus making flying hard. * fear of having panic attacks in certain places, where escape would be difficult and/or embarrassing (agoraphobia) * fear of hijacking or terrorism * fear of turbulence * fear of flying over water or night flying * fear of crashing resulting in injury or death * the result of hormone release during pregnancy * the result of difficulty with the regulation of emotion when not in control due to developmental issues. If fear of flying is not irrational, then why are there behavioral therapy treatments for it? And did you know that recent neurological research suggests that fear of flying is not the result of a single sensitizing event, but - like other affective disorders - is the result of chronic exposure to emotional dysregulation in childhood which hindered development of the right prefrontal orbito cortex, rendering it unable to carry out its executive role in the regulation of affect? Did you catch the word ** disorders ** in there, Luch? You're in good company, though - Kim Jong Il suffers from fear of flying. |
