What would that have achieved in this case? How is a Dutch screening any different than a Nigerian one. Passengers are very rarely subjected to the explosives screening (for me, it's very roughly about 1 in every 20 flights) and we have no idea about whether the powder he carried would have been caught by that screen.

It has been well know for quite some time that you can mix up a bomb with household chemicals and that flights are at risk to this type of attack. We've been fortunate thus far that it is not easy to do -- and people trained to do it correctly and bright enough to do it correctly are generally not willing to blow themselves up...

It will be interesting to see how this story develops, but as of now it appears that this was a guy who was recruited by Al Qaeda with instruction in how to blow up a plane and given specific instructions to wait until the plane was in US airspace to do it (read -- with the hopes of killing Americans on the ground as well).

I know this frustrates those who want to go back to a less restrictive security environment in our public spaces, but the threat is real -- however infrequent -- and the targets are American citizens.
